HARTFORD, Conn. -- First-year Matt Chlastawa had four goals and an assist to lead the visiting Bates men's lacrosse team to a 14-7 victory at Trinity College in NESCAC men's lacrosse action Saturday, keeping the No. 8 nationally ranked Bobcats undefeated at 5-0, including a 3-0 conference record. Trinity (1-3, 0-3 NESCAC) led 2-1 just over six minutes into the game, as Matt Gardiner assisted Jack Sharrio on a man-up, game-tying goal with 9:03 on the clock and scored just 11 seconds later when Scott Morgan won the ensuing faceoff, scooped the ground ball, and fed Gardiner for the score. Chlastawa (Westfield, Mass.) answered with a game-tying tally for Bates from senior Andrew Melvin (Medfield, Mass.) at the 7:35 mark of the first quarter, and Bobcat senior Charlie Fay (Falmouth, Maine) converted on a feed by senior Kyle Weber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) with 4:27 left in the opening period, and Bates led the rest of the way. Weber and Chlastawa added two more Bates goal to put Trinity in a 5-2 hole after 15 minutes of play. Each team scored twice in the second quarter. Sharrio scored a second man-up goal from Gardiner to pull Trinity to within two again at 6-4 with 4:49 remaining before intermission. Weber gave the Bobcats a 7-4 lead at the break with an unassisted tally at the 2:39 mark of the second stanza. Ferrucci scored for Trinity just under two minutes into the third quarter, but Bates took control with a 6-0 run that spilled into the fourth quarter and included two goals apiece by Chlastawa and Melvin. Chlastawa and Melvin each scored a pair of goals in the decisive run, which began with senior Scott Baber's (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) tally on Chlastawa's assist with 10:19 to go in the third. First-year Curtis Knapton (Westbrook, Maine) scored on an assist from senior Wes Shrewsbury (Boxford, Mass.) with a minute left in the period, and Bates extended the lead to 13-5 when Chlastawa scored unassisted with 12:17 left in the game. Sharrio paced Trinity offensively with two goals and two assists, while Ferrucci finished with three goals. Woody Hamilton made 19 saves for the Bantams. Melvin and Weber finished with two goals and one assist apiece for Bates, while senior Sam Francis (Newburyport, Mass.) won 13 of 19 faceoffs and scooped a game-high nine ground balls. Bobcat sophomore Mitchell Drake (Annapolis, Md.) made 11 of his team's 12 saves and added two ground balls to improve to 4-0 in goal. Bates outshot Trinity 49-27, forced 22 turnovers while committing 18, and had 10 more ground balls than the Bantams with 47 to offset six penalties, three of which resulted in Trinity goals. Bates next plays a non-conference game at Keene State on Tuesday at 5pm.
