Greenville, S.C. – Behind a five-goal third quarter, Furman men's lacrosse downed Canisius, 12-10, on a soggy, cold night in Paladin Stadium. The win, Furman's first of 2019, moves the Paladins to 1-3 on the year, while the loss drops the Golden Griffins to 1-2.
"I thought it was a hard-fought win," said Furman head coach Richie Meade. "I thought our guys fought hard the entire game. We've had a great rivalry with Canisius over the last serveral years, and I thought from start to finish we played hard and we played well. The guys were really determined and I was happy about that."
Furman was led by Jarret Birch with three goals and an assist (four points) on the night, while William Holcomb added a goal and three assists (four points). David Williamson netted two scores on the evening and four other Paladins also registered a goal. Alec Van de Bovenkamp played all 60:00 in goal for Furman, making 13 saves and picking up his first win of the season.
Furman opened the game with back-to-back goals by Austin Leonard and David Williamson, before Canisius cut the lead to one on an extra man goal. The Paladins responded with a goal by William Holcomb, pushing the lead back to 3-1 after 15:00 of play.
Canisius evened the score at three to open the second, but the Paladins used back-to-back goals by Jarrett Birch and Anders Erickson to push the lead back to two at 5-3 with 7:00 remaining in the half. Both teams were held scoreless for the rest of the quarter, as the Paladins took the 5-3 lead into halftime.
The Golden Griffins cut the lead to one to open the second half, but the Paladins used a 5-1 scoring run to close out the quarter and take a 10-5 lead into the game's final 15 minutes. Canisius used a 4-1 run in the fourth to cut the lead to two with under 6:00 to play, but Dougie McCoy scored his first career goal on an assist from Kevin Smith to push the lead to 12-9 and put the game out of reach.
Furman is back in action on Sunday, February 24, playing host to Hampton in a 2:00 p.m. game.
