No. 15 Colorado Mesa Mavericks men's lacrosse team (7-0, 2-0) handed the No. 11 Rockhurst Hawks (5-1, 1-0) their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon at Walker Field by a score of 14-10. This victory was huge for the Mavericks and will be a great boost of confidence as they remain undefeated and have no games until their spring break trip, heading into Florida. This win marks the programs best start to a season winning their first seven games of the year. The previous record was six wins during the 2018 season. Leading the Mavericks to their win was Jed Brummett with six goals which was a career high for the freshman. His six goals recorded against the Hawks puts himself tied at No. 3 in the record book for goals in a game. Adding to this victory was AJ Switzer with three goals and one assist. These two men scored right off the bat in the first quarter. Brummett continued throughout the whole game to be on fire and played a huge role in beating this nationally ranked opponent. Holden Evans also contributed to the Mavericks score of 5-3 after the first quarter. The Hawks got rolling to begin the second quarter with three consecutive goals, bringing the score to 6-5 in favor of the Hawks. The Mavericks responded by taking the lead with three more goals, adding to both Brummett's and Switzer's goal totals. At the end of the second half, the score was 8-6, as the Mavericks held a lead at the break. This third quarter consisted of five penalties, three of which were issued to the Hawks and two to the Mavericks. Alec Heflin, a freshman for the Hawks, scored a goal to get within one, 8-7.
