Hofstra jumped out to a fast start, and James Madison never found an offensive rhythm, falling 13-7 on Saturday afternoon at the US Lacrosse Complex. The Pride improved to 4-4 on the year while the Dukes fell to 5-4. The loss ended their five-game win streak against Hofstra, and it was also HU's largest win ever against JMU. Katie Whelan set the tone for Hofstra's offense, scoring six goals with two assists. Alyssa Parrella also had five points off three goals and two assists, to go with a game-best six draw controls. Amanda Guerra also scored twice, and Alexa Mattera also had a goal and five draws, helping the Pride hold a 10-draw advantage in the game. For JMU, redshirt sophomore Kacey Knobloch had two goals and an assist, and redshirt sophomore Rachel Matey had one goal and a helper. No other JMU player had more than one point on the afternoon. Defensively, redshirt senior Emma Johnson had a game-high three ground balls, while redshirt sophomore Lizzy Fox tallied a caused turnover and two ground balls. Matey also contributed a pair of draws and two ground balls. Hofstra opened the game with the first four goals, holding JMU off the scoreboard for 17:30. JMU reeled off four of the next five to pull within 5-4 with 3:23 left, but the Pride answered with six of the next seven to control the tempo down the stretch. INSIDE THE BOX SCORE Hofstra controlled the pace on offense, holding a 36-24 shots advantage (20-16 SOG). The Pride dominated the circle, winning 16 off 22 draw controls, including 10 off 11 in the first half. JMU held a lead in ground balls, by a 12-10 margin. Both teams did a solid job not giving the ball away, as JMU had 10 turnovers and Hofstra 11. The ride was also clean for the most part with JMU converting 19-of-20 clears and Hofstra completing 17-of-18. JMU was 0-for-3 on free-position shots, while Hofstra cashed in on 3-of-6, with all three scores coming in the second half. The loss ended a 16-game win streak for JMU when committing fewer turnovers. Today's game did not count toward the Colonial Athletic Association standings, as games involving North and South teams are considered non-conference matchups. UP NEXT JMU returns to action Wednesday, April 14 when it travels to Williamsburg, Va., to face CAA foe William & Mary. The opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
