University of Richmond senior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) recorded a Southern Conference record and program-record 12 points while sophomore attack Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) scored a program-record seven goals Saturday as the 19th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 in Southern Conference play Saturday with a dominating 17-5 victory on the road at Bellarmine. The Spiders are now 32-5 all-time in SoCon play in program history – the most wins for any team in league play over that span. Lanchbury finished the game with 12 points, scoring three goals and dishing out nine assists. His 12 points is a new Richmond and Southern Conference single game record, breaking the former league mark of 11 points set in 2015 (Tom Moore, Jacksonville). His 12 points are the most by any player so far this year in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse and tied for 31st most all-time in NCAA men's lacrosse history. Lanchbury dished out a career-high nine assists, setting a new program and SoCon record as well. The nine assists is tied for 10th most all-time in NCAA men's lacrosse and the most this season in the country. The previous record for a Spider in a single game was five assists while the league record broken was seven (Tom Moore, Jacksonville 2015). Five of his nine assists game on passes to Connell Saturday. Connell set a new single-game program record with seven goals in the victory. The seven goals ties the single-game mark in SoCon history and is the fifth highest total this year in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse. He entered the game with seven goals on the season and doubled his season total with three goals in the first half and four in the second half. Connell's nine points are second all-time in program history, surpassing the previous game-high of eight points held by former Spider Teddy Hatfield (four times). Lost in all of the records was sophomore attack Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) who added four goals and an assist in the victory. Young has scored 10 goals in the first two SoCon games of the year after tying the previous single-game goal record with six against the Keydets last week when he was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week. Freshman Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) added two goals in the victory, his second-straight multiple-goal game of his career. Face-off specialist Jacob Griffin (Skokie, Ill.) continued his strong play of late, winning 14-of-21 face-offs and picking up a game-high nine ground balls. Griffin, the reigning SoCon Defensive Player of the Week, has won 36-of-47 face-offs in SoCon play while grabbing 25 ground balls in the two victories. Senior goalie Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) played the first 51:15 and posted six saves in the victory. Redshirt freshman Devin Craven (McLean, Va.) posted a career-high six saves in the final 8:45 of the contest. Bellarmine (2-7, 0-1 SoCon) scored the game's first two goals and held a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Spiders dominated the second quarter, out-scoring the Knights 6-1 taking an 8-4 lead into halftime. Connell scored three-straight goals to start the second quarter while Young added a pair sandwiched around a Lanchbury goal. The Spiders (3-3, 2-0 SoCon) scored the first five goals of the second half as Madonna scored a pair and Connell, Lanchbury and Young each found the back of the net. After a Bellarmine goal, Connell scored three-straight and Lanchbury capped the scoring early in the fourth quarter to give the Spiders a 17-5 victory. Richmond returns home to Robins Stadium next Friday evening when it welcomes in SoCon rival High Point. The rare Friday game is set for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN Plus.
