Graduate Student and Marquette captain Charlotte McGuire scored five goals to lead the Golden Eagles (5-4) to a 19-8 win over Canisius in collegiate women's lacrosse action Friday afternoon. Four other Golden Knights tallied four points during Friday's contest, including Lancaster, N.Y., native senior Grace Gabriel who found the back of the net four times. Junior Megan Menzuber (2 goals/2 assists), senior Cate Soccodato (1 goal/3 assists) and freshman Shea Garcia (3 goals/1 assist) also contributed to the Marquette attack. Jules Horning made the start in net for the Golden Eagles, before being relieved in the second half by Sophia Leva and Delaney Friel. Junior Bryar Cummings made her presence known this afternoon, as the midfielder scored twice, won seven draw controls and caused a turnover for the Golden Griffins (0-7). Sophomore Marissa Malvaso and graduate transfer Rachel Hiedenreich also found the back of the net on two occasions, while freshman Katie Smolensky recorded a team-high three points on one goal and two helpers. Freshman net-minder Shannon Maroney made 14 saves as she played a full 60-minutes for the Griffs. The Blue and Gold won a total of 16 draw controls, compared to just 12 for Marquette. For the third time in four games Canisius got on the board first as Heidenreich put one past the Golden Eagles goalkeeper 1:19 into the contest. Marquette would respond with back-to-back goals from McGuire to take its first lead of the game at the 23:55 mark. Just thirty seconds after the Golden Eagles made it a 2-1 game, Cummings tied it at two for the Blue and Gold. The junior would make it a 3-2 Griffs lead a couple of minutes later when she found the back of the net for the eighth time this season. After three goals from Marquette, Marissa Malvaso scored her first goal of the game to temporarily slow down the Golden Eagles 10-1 scoring run that gave them a 12-4 halftime advantage. In the second half, Marquette would tack on two more goals to go up 14-4 before Marissa Malvaso and Smolensky scored back-to-back goals for Canisiu, making the score 14-6. From there, Marquette quickly made it a double-digit game following a 5-0 run that lasted 9:07 of game time to take a 19-6 lead. The Griffs would tally two goals in the final three minutes of play, one from senior Jourdan Roemer and another from Heidenreich to determine the final margin, 19-8. Head Coach Allison Daley Postgame Comments "I think again there were moments of the team we can be, but once again the consistency was not there. Against a team like Marquette, if you make unforced turnovers they will make you pay for it. Early on in the first half when the game was tight we made some good defensive stops and failed to clear the ball and they capitalized on those opportunities multiple times in the half and that was what really pulled the game away from us." Game Notes • Friday was the first ever meeting between Marquette and Canisius. • Smolensky's goal in the second half was the first of the freshman's career. • Cummings recorded a season-high five shots while scoring her seventh and eight goals of the season. The junior has recorded at least one point in each of the Griffs seven games this season. • Maroney tallied 14 saves, marking the first time in her career she has stopped 10 or more shots. It was also the first time this season a Canisius goalkeeper made double-digit saves. Up Next The Golden Griffins are back on the road for another non-league game when they take on Bryant Wednesday afternoon at Bernie Stadium in Smithfield, R.I. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m. and can be streamed live on NEC Front Row.
