Despite sophomore netminder, Lauren Gilbert tying the Canisius single-game saves record with 20 stops in the cage, Quinnipiac (4-7, 1-2 MAAC) came out victorious in Saturday afternoon's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse contest, 14-13. Gilbert is the third Canisius goalie with 20 saves in a game, joining Rebecca VanLaeken (at Northwestern, Feb. 10, 2018) and Allison Daley (at Siena, April 16, 2010). On the offensive end, freshman Katie Smolensky recorded her first career hat trick to go along with a pair of assists. Sisters Marissa Malvaso and Miranda Malvaso, along with junior Bryar Cummings and grad transfer Rachel Heidenreich all found the back of the net twice on the afternoon. The Golden Griffins (0-11, 0-3 MAAC) were 19-for-21 on their clear attempts and caused five turnovers on the day, compared to just two for the Bobcats. For Quinnipiac, a total of nine players found the back of the net in the win, led by Megan Szawlowski, who tallied a game-high six points with her three goals and three helpers. Taylor Sanna, Gabby Beckett and Allison Kuhn each scored twice, while Amy Hauser had the deciding tally for Quinnipiac. The Bobcats took the edge on the draw, 16-15, led by Brianna Fitzgerald's six draw control victories. Quinnipiac put a total of 34 shots on net in the win. After Quinnipiac scored the first goal of the game just over two minutes in, Canisius scored six unanswered to take a commanding 6-1 lead in the first 10-minutes of action. The run was highlighted by two of Smolensky's three goals on the afternoon. Canisius would extend its 9-4 halftime lead to 11-5 at the 26:43 mark following back-to-back goals by Smolensky and Cummings. From there, however, Quinnipiac broke off an 8-2 run to tie the game 13-13 and send the game to overtime. During the run Szawlowski, Beckett and Sanna each recorded multiple goals to lead the Bobcats back to even. In the first overtime, the Bobcats scored what looked like the game-winning goal off the stick of Kuhn, but the goal was disallowed because she entered the crease on her follow-through. The Bobcats would put a total of three shots on net in the first extra period, each of which was met by Gilbert. With just over two minutes gone in the second overtime frame, Hauser slipped the game-winner by Gilbert to send Quinnipiac home with its first conference win of the season. Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments "The biggest thing to take away is to be resilient. We have to be resilient when we are up and when we are down. I think now, more than ever, we have to show how resilient we are as a program as we go forth in these next five MAAC games." "Gilby [Lauren Gilbert] was phenomenal, you can't ask more from that girl today in-between the pipes, she played great, she had some huge stops and made us proud back there." Game Notes • Canisius is now 5-4 all-time versus the Bobcats. • Smolensky recorded her first ever five-point outing as a member of the Blue and Gold. • Saturday was the first time that sister's Marissa and Miranda Malvaso both scored multiple goals in a single game. • In fact, for Miranda, it was just her second multi-goal outing of her career with the last one coming April 28, 2018, against Niagara. • At 19 years, five months and 21 days old Gilbert is the youngest of the three goalies in Canisius history to record 20 saves. Up Next Canisius hits the road for a mid-week contest with the Red Foxes of Marist. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
