WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Canisius College (1-13, 1-5 MAAC) had no answer for the conference's top scoring offense as Monmouth University (10-5, 4-2 MAAC) cruised past the Golden Griffins Saturday afternoon at Kessler Stadium. Sophomore Caroline Bleck (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) and junior Rachel Mills (Denville, NJ/West Morris Catholic/Towson) recorded career days as the Blue & White built up a 9-2 advantage at halftime. Bleck finished with eight points on four goals and four assists while Mills had five goals in the outing. Monmouth dominated the first 17 minutes of play, leading 5-0 before Canisius was able to get one past Riley Brager (Reisterstown, MD/Rolan Park Country) with 10:24 left. The Golden Griffins got a quick follow-up goal but Monmouth would rattle off four unanswered including two from the stick of junior Sarah Gillogly (Edgewater, MD/South River). Logan Smet (Rockville, MD/Academy of Holy Cross) started up the second half scoring before Canisius' Marissa Malvasso tallied back to back goals to cut the lead to 10-3 with 22 minutes left. Monmouth's rebuttal was quick and decisive, scoring five of the next six goals to take a commanding 15-5 lead. The Hawks dominated the statsheet, winning 19 of the 24 draws, outshooting Canisius 39-18 and committing just 13 turnovers. Allison Turturro (Sound Beach, NY/Miller Place) won a career-high 11 draw controls while chipping in with a hat trick on the day. NOTES & QUOTES "I think we needed to come out and show who we are, we needed a game and a day like this. I'm really proud of the effort on both sides of the field but this is what we have been waiting for. We've been talking about taking moments and taking opportunities and that's what they did today." Monmouth Head Coach Jordan Trautman "I think our offense is dynamic, we aren't one dimensional. People are stepping up in big ways and that's something that is a testament to our practices. Coming off the bench people are producing and the depth and creativity on the offense is really producing." Trautman on the play of the offense "My team has been doing a great job of passing the ball around and creating space for each other and I think that's been really helpful. I think those two losses we had really motivated us to come out strong today and finish the regular season strong. From the very first whistle to the end of the game we played a full sixty minutes and we really needed that." Junior midfielder Rachel Mills Junior Megan Hart set the single season record for draw controls with 80, after winning four in the game Bleck's eight points tied Nicole Ceraso (3 times) for the most points by a Monmouth player this season Ceraso inched closer to the all-time assist record, adding three more to her totals to give her 100 career assists. She now needs five to move into first all-time at Monmouth Ceraso's 33 assists is the fifth most in school history for a single season and four behind her 2018 totals Monmouth is now 2-7 all-time against the Golden Griffins but have won the last two matchups The Hawks have won 10 games for the first time since the 2016 season, the first and only time the Hawks made it to the MAAC Championship Game The six goals allowed is the lowest in a conference game since the 2016 season, when Monmouth held Quinnipiac and Manhattan to six goals each Ceraso's 65 points is the 10th most in school history. She now has 174 career points which is 10th all-time and 11 points behind ninth place. Mills has now scored 13 goals the last four games, including nine in the last two. Mills also had two caused turnovers, three draw controls and two ground balls in the win Monmouth's offense, which came into the contest leading the MAAC, is averaging 13.0 goals per game after the win over Canisius NUMBERS CRUNCH Monmouth, who had been shooting nearly 50% on free position attempts was 0-for-5 on the day Brager finished with six total saves while Canisius' Lauren Gilbert had 13 saves in the loss The Hawks caused 12 turnovers, with Emily Holtz and Monica Cortes each causing three miscues The Golden Griffins were led offensively by sisters Miranda and Marissa Malvaso who had two goals each Monmouth's defense allowed just seven shots in the final 30 minutes and only five on goal NEXT UP Monmouth will wrap up the home portion of the regular season with a 3 PM game against Manhattan on Wednesday.
