FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Diana DeVita completed a hat trick with 28.6 seconds remaining as Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse scored six of the day's final seven goals to rally past Canisius, 12-11, on Senior Day on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Brooke Gallagher paced the Stags' offense with six points in the victory. With the win, Fairfield (13-3, 8-0 MAAC) runs its winning streak to nine consecutive games and completes the Stags' first-ever 8-0 MAAC regular season. Fairfield has gone unbeaten the MAAC on nine prior occasions during the era of the six-game conference slate. The Stags' nine-game overall win streak is the program's longest since 2009. Prior to the game, Fairfield Women's Lacrosse honored its 2019 senior class: Bridget Weill, Kathleen Hulseman, Taylor Mitchell and co-captains Erin Mammele and Megan Beach. The seniors have been a part of 47 Fairfield victories after today's win with a 25-7 record in the MAAC regular season. Gallagher's six points were comprised of two goals with four assists, including the helper on DeVita's game-winner, to run her total to 65 points this season. She ranks eighth in single-season history in points, and her 31 assists slot second behind Brenna Connolly's program-record 42 assists last spring. In addition to DeVita's fourth career hat trick, she also doled out an assist to cap a four-point day and helped keep the Stags' on the attack with four ground balls. Kelly Horning and Jillian Winwood each added a pair of goals, with Hulseman, Mitchell and Meaghan Graham each netting one. Horning, Hulseman and Graham also each picked up an assist. In the midfield, Gallagher, Horning and Nicollette LaVista each collected two draw controls, and Caroline Mangan came away with one restart. Mangan also led the defensive effort with a pair of caused turnovers, with Maggie Reynolds collecting two ground balls from the back row. In the cage, Olivia Conquest made six saves to secure the win. With her 13th win, she moves into a tie of third on Fairfield's single-season wins list. Conquest matches Paulina DiFatta's program record for the most wins by a first-year goalkeeper. Today's win saw the Stags fall behind by four goals – their largest deficit during the nine-game winning streak. Fairfield netted just one marker in a span of over 30 minutes of game time as Canisius stormed out to a 10-6 lead with 21:03 to go. However, Fairfield turns the tides with a 6-1 run of their own as they limited the Griffs to one goal the rest of the way. "We have won a lot of different versions of one-goal games this season. Today was not our best lacrosse against a really good team, but to hold them off the way we did in the second half was huge," said Head Coach Laura Field. "We just chipped away at it and it's a testament to the seniors, who were not only the ones shutting it down on defense but they were good distributing the ball of offense." "I think a big component of today and this season as a whole has been trust," added Mammele. "We trust each other on defense to get stops and on offense to score and get the job done." Fairfield won five of its eight MAAC games by one goal. The Stags last won five one-goal games in a season in the 2015 MAAC Championship campaign. Canisius (2-14, 2-6 MAAC), which will be the No. 6 seed in the MAAC Championship, was led by five points from Jourdan Roemer with two goals and three assists. Roemer broke the Griffs' career points record with her first tally of the day. Rachel Heidenreich and Jen Reininger each netted a hat trick for the visitors. In the cage, Lauren Gilbert went the distance and made 10 saves. As the top seed in the MAAC, Fairfield earns a bye to the semifinal round of the MAAC Championship, which will be contested on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. The Stags will learn their first postseason opponent at the conclusion of the MAAC Championship First Round on April 27. "We've beaten a lot of good teams in close games, and we're going to see some of those teams again," said Beach. "We have to work hard in practice and stay focused to make sure we're ready in two weeks." Additional information about the 2019 MAAC Championship will be announced at FairfieldStags.com as it is finalized by the conference office.
