MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan lacrosse team lost to Furman, 8-6, in a cold, snowy Southern Conference battle on Sunday at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. CMU drops to 6-8, 2-2 SoCon. Furman improves to 7-7, 2-1. HOW IT HAPPENED Furman got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first three goals and then extending its lead to 5-1. Then it was CMU's turn. Natalie Karlen scored and then Jocelyne Lemay scored three consecutive goals for a natural hat trick as the Chippewas forged a 5-5 tie. Lemay's fourth-consecutive goal re-tied the game, 6-6, at the 14:54 mark of the second half. Abby Shields scored at 23:42 to put the Paladins back in front, 7-6, and then Sophie Brennan scored an insurance goal with under 4 minutes left. CMU COACH SARA TISDALE "I think overall, we didn't shoot the ball very well," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "The scouting on their goalie was spot on, and unfortunately we weren't able to capitalize on our opportunities. We knew that she was very good down low at her feet. We were 0-5 on our free position shots; we can't have that. They're called free for a reason. You have to have a couple of those converted, and that was probably the difference in the game." "Furman is a great opponent, I'm not upset about the outcome at all in any way, shape or form. I think our defense has played the best they've played. We just have to clean up a couple of things, and have a couple of things go our way and we'll be alright." LEADERS Shannon Doyle also scored for the Chippewas, while Jessica Schuchardt, and Courtney Burke each had an assist. Hope Murray made 10 saves in goal for CMU. THE WEATHER The weather at Sunday's game was miserable, with cold temperatures and windy conditions along with snow. "(The snow) definitely made feeds hard," Tisdale said. "At one point, when it was hailing into your eyes, we really couldn't see anything out there. It's obviously hard to get footing under you, but it was the same for both teams. "It wasn't more snowy on our end compared to their end. Unfortunately it was just the matter of some of the things we were looking to do were harder to execute with the way the snow was." NEXT CMU has two home games next week. The first is scheduled for Thursday, April 18 (6 p.m.) against Costal Carolina. The second is on Saturday, April 20 (11 a.m.) against Kent State.
