The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team opened its 2019 campaign Friday afternoon at chilly Gettler Stadium and fell to visiting Ohio State, 16-6. Sam Mlkvy netted a trio of goals and Monica Borzillo chipped in a pair of scores and an assist as the Bearcats slipped to 0-1 on the year while the Buckeyes opened their season 1-0. // QUICK NOTES • Cincinnati is now 0-1 on the year and Ohio State is 1-0 following the contest • OSU is now 7-1 all-time in the series after UC snapped a winless skid to the Buckeyes last year in Cincinnati • With the loss, the Bearcats are now 3-8 all-time in their first game of a season and 5-7 in their first home game of a season • Mlkvy scored half of UC's goals with a hat trick while Borzillo added two • Mlkvy also recorded a career-high 11 draw controls, tying her first the second-most in a single game in UC history • Freshman Kylie Nause netted her first career goal with Borzillo assisting • Nause was one of three rookies that saw their first collegiate action in the game with Zoe Antona and Kate Brocato also debuting • Ali Mazzola earned her first career start as well // HOW IT HAPPENED The Buckeyes used several runs to put the game out of reach, opening play with a trios of goals before the Bearcats were able to respond. Sophie Baez scored the first two goals in the game with Baley Parrott adding another to stake the visitors to a 3-0 lead just eight minutes in. Mlkvy ended the run with a goal of her own as she charged in on goal and fired a low shot into the net to make it 3-1. OSU regained the momentum and scored the next four goals for a 7-1 advantage as Liza Hernandez scored two of the goals with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Mlkvy once again found the back of the net to halt the Buckeye run, but OSU added two more in the final minute to take a 10-3 at the break. Following halftime, both teams traded a goal with Borzillo striking for the first time in the game after OSU made it 11-3. The Buckeyes netted a pair of goals after that, including one with a man advantage, making it 13-4 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest. The two-goal streak was snapped by the Bearcats as Borzillo found Nause in front of the cage before Nause found the back of the cage for her first goal. But, the Buckeyes added a trio of goals late before Mlkvy nabbed her hat trick with less than three minutes to go to bring about the final margin, 16-6. // MLKVY ALL OVER THE PLACE Not only did Mlkvy lead the team in goals (3) and tied for the lead in points (3), she also had a career day in draw controls as she won 11 to better her previous high of 10 from last year. The 11 draws tied Mlkvy with Megan Bell for #2 in single game history at UC after Bell first accomplished the against Louisville in 2012. Those 11 controls also pushed Mlkvy's career total to 98, leaving her two shy of the century mark and placing her sixth all-time in program history. // BORZILLO CONTINUES TO STREAK With two goals scored and three points in total, Borzillo continued a pair of scoring streaks from last season. To date, Borzillo has now recorded at least one point in 18-consecutive games, tying her for the second-longest streak in program history. Already the record holder in the next category, Borzillo's three points made it 11 games in a row with two or more points. // OPENING HER ACCOUNT Nause was the lone rookie to record a point in the game as she tallied her first career goal with 10:04 gone in the second half. Nause finished the game with one goal on two shots while adding one ground ball and one caused turnover. DEBUTANTES Along with Nause, two other freshmen saw their first action. Antona saw action but did not record any stats while Brocato took over in goal with 4:05 remaining in the game. NEXT UP The Bearcats will look to rebound from today's defeat Sunday as they are set to welcome Kent State to Gettler Stadium for a 1 p.m. start. The game will be the first ever for the Golden Flashes program as they will become the third NCAA Division I team to play in the state.
