For the second game in a row, the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team's offensive exploded as the Bearcats netted a program-record-tying 22 goals to defeat visiting Marquette, 22-18, Friday afternoon at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats (2-1) broke the school record for points in a game with 32 and, combined with their win against Kent State last week, the most goals scored in back-to-back games in program history while the visiting Golden Eagle (1-2) dropped their second game in a row on the season. // QUICK NOTES • Cincinnati improved to 2-1 on the year after defeating its former Big East rival while Marquette slipped to 1-2 overall in 2019 • The Bearcats defeated the Golden Eagles for just the second time in the seven-game series and snapped MU's five-game winning streak in the all-time series • Today's 22 goals marks the most either team has scored in the series (was 19 by MU last year) and marks the most UC has ever scored against the Golden Eagles, surpassing the 15 UC scored last year on the road • Overall, seven Bearcats scored at least one goal on the day with five players scoring at least two and four recording three or more • Taylor Gysin led the offensive charge with career highs in points (8), goals (6) and assists (2), Kate Carney added career highs in all three as well with six points, two goals and four assists and Alyssa Adams recorded career highs in both points (5) and goals (5) • The 22 goals, combined with the 19 posted against Kent State Sunday, gives UC 41 in its last two contests, the most in a two-game stretch in program history • As a team, UC broke the school record for points in a game with 34 and tying the mark for goals in a game with 22 while posting the third-most assists in a game with 12 • Although in its infancy, the Bearcats set a trio of single-game records for the American Athletic Conference today, including points, goals and assists while the goal total broke their own record of 19 (vs. Kent State) set last week // HOW IT HAPPENED Both teams utilized big runs in the game with the Bearcats using their to build what would be an insurmountable lead while the Golden Eagles' run kept them in the contest late in the game. In the first half, UC struck first as Adams and Gysin scored on back-to-back possessions to stake UC to a 2-0 lead. After both teams traded goals, MU scored two in a row to tie things at 3-3. That is when UC put together a seven-goal run that pushed the hosts into a 10-3 lead. The run was book-ended by Gysin goals and another added to the mix with Adams, Amanda Donovan (two) and Gianna Napoletano adding to the score. The half ended with each team trading a pair of goals as Monica Borzillo and Donovan each scored to bring the score to 12-5 in favor of UC at halftime. Following the break, The Bearcats bagged the first two goals with strikes from Carney and Adams for a 14-5 lead before MU answered back with two goals of their own. UC saw Gysin score her fifth of the day to stop the streak before the visitors scored twice more to make it 15-9 with just over 17 minutes remaining. Borzillo scored before an MU goal with Carney and Adams following with goals of their own to put the Bearcats into an eight-goal lead (18-10) with 14:08 remaining. That is when the Golden Eagles made things interesting as they scored the next five goals to close to within three (18-15) at the 10:55 mark. Donovan, who entered the game having not scored a goal in 2019, ended the MU scoring run with her fourth of the day and Kylie Nause added her second career goal to give UC a little more breathing room at 20-15 with 7:07 remaining. From there, the teams would trade goals with Adams and Gysin scoring for the Bearcats with 1:28 showing to put the game out of reach for the Golden Eagles. // GYSIN GETTING GOALS To say Gysin was in the zone might be an understatement for today's performance, a showing the produced eight points on six goals and two assists while also adding seven draw controls. Her points are three better than her previous career high and rank her tied for sixth on the program's single-game Top 10 list while her six goals, which surpassed her previous best of four, stands as the fifth-best showing (tied) in a single game at UC. Two of her goals came when she won a draw control and raced down the field to score as she finished the game with a career-best seven controls, five more than she had recorded in a single game prior to today. // ADAMS UNLOADS Ahead of today's game, Adams held career-highs of three points (twice) and three goals (twice) with the most recent instance coming last year at home against ECU. Today, she nearly doubled both totals as she scored five points on five goals. One of her goals was a free-position score that also tied her single-game career-high. // CARNEY GETS TO THE POINTS Carney's big day saw the sophomore tally a career-high six points as she equaled both her single-game goal (2) and assist (4) career-highs in the process. Previously, she tallied five points against Gardner-Webb last year, a day that included four assists, tying her for the eighth-most in a single game in UC history. Her two goals today tied her single-game high she last year, at Marquette. // AD BACK ON THE BOARD Heading into the game, Donovan, one of the top returning scorers on the team, struggled to find her scoring touch as she had not tallied a single point in the previous two games. That changed today as she not only scored four goals, but she scored at some of the most needed times. Her goal total today is one off her single-game career high (5 vs. Butler in 2017) while the six ground balls she collected bettered her career high of five she had recorded three times previously. // REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK As a team, UC broke one program record, tied another and missed a third by one assist. The 34 points scored is two better than the previous mark of 32 set April 1, 2017 (no kidding) against Butler. The 22 goals scored ties the all-time mark set against Presbyterian in 2013 (March 17) while the 12 assists are one shy of equaling the mark of 13 set twice, including at Fresno State in 2010 (March 23) and home to Presbyterian 10 days prior (3/13/10) // BACK-TO-BACK BARRAGE With today's 22 goals, the Bearcats have scored 41 goals in their last two games to brake the program record for back-to-back scoring of 37 set in 2012. That year, UC won, 17-12, at Fresno State (2/19/12) before downing host Presbyterian (2/26/12), 20-16. // EARLY CONFERENCE BEST Although the American is just under two weeks old, the Bearcats' performances over the past two games are already setting the standard in single-game records. The 22 goals UC scored today is the most in a single game in AAC history, surpassing the 19 UC scored against Kent State last week. Additionally, UC's 34 points and 12 assists took away top billing from ECU in both categories after the Pirates tallied 26 points and eight assists against Gardener-Webb. // NEXT UP The Bearcats return to action with a pair of games next week, starting first with a road trip to Blacksburg, Va., Wednesday to face #14 Virginia Tech before returning home next Sunday to face Detroit Mercy at Gettler Stadium
