The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team put up a fight on Wednesday evening, but the Spiders couldn't overcome a powerful Virginia team, falling 15-7 at Klöckner Stadium. It was a slow start for both teams, but Julia Schmuckler got the Spiders on the board first in the seventh minute with an unassisted goal. The Cavaliers scored a minute later to tie things up and then logged four more goals to take a 5-1 lead with under 12 minutes to play. Aly Fries scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Kim Egizi, but the Cavaliers rebounded with three more goal of their own to take a, 8-2 lead into the break. Virginia scored twice to take a 10-2 lead early in the second half, but the Spiders bounced back with two goals of their own from Katie Sciandra and Mia Castagnero. The two teams continued to trade goals, with Castagnero scoring her second just before the midway points of the half and Egizi scored on a free position shot to cut the Cavalier lead in half. Two Cavalier goals gave the hosts a 14-6 lead, but Sciandra ran through the defense to score her second of the night and cut into the deficit again. Virginia's next goal would be the last of the game for a 15-7 final score. The Spiders return to action next Saturday, March 3, when they host Liberty at Robins Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
