No. 5/7 Syracuse suffered its first setback of the season in a 17-16 loss to No. 9/11 Virginia on Sunday, March 4. Freshman Emily Hawryschuk scored her fourth goal of the game to bring the Orange within one with 1:35 remaining, but Syracuse turned it over on its final possession to give the Cavaliers the victory in the ACC opener for both teams. Hawryschuk and freshman Sam Swart tallied four goals each, while senior Riley Donahue also had four points on two goals and two assists. HOW IT WAS DECIDED Redshirt sophomore Mary Rahal recorded her third goal of the game on an assist from Donahue at the 7:03 mark to even the score at 15-15 for the eighth tie of the game. Avery Shoemaker broke the tie and gave Virginia (5-0) the lead for good with 3:40 remaining with an unassisted goal. Daniela Kelly added a free-position goal with 2:17 on the clock to put the Cavaliers up by two. Hawryschuk cut the deficit to one when she converted on the free-position attempt. Virginia was assessed a yellow card on the goal, giving the Orange possession. But Syracuse turned it over and the Cavaliers were able to run out the clock for the victory. Syracuse (3-1) used a 4-0 scoring run in the first half to take its largest lead of the game at 8-4. Junior Nicole Levy scored twice during the run, including another goal on a behind-the-back shot. Virginia answered with three straight goals before Hawryschuk and Rahal recorded back-to-back goals to give the Orange a 10-8 halftime lead. Virginia scored five of the first six goals of the second half to take a 13-11 lead. The Orange evened the score at 13-13 as neither team could pull away until the Cavaliers took the two-goal lead with 3:40 on the clock. OF NOTE Hawryschuk scored four goals in a game for the third time in four games this season. She leads Syracuse in scoring with 15 points. Swart's four goals are a season high.
