CINCINNATI - With a well balanced scoring attack that saw seven different players score, the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team snapped a three-game slide with a big win Friday afternoon at Gettler Stadium as the Bearcats scored a 17-11 victory over visiting San Diego State, handing the visitors just their second loss of the season. The Bearcats (4-5) saw three players score hat tricks, including Alyssa Adams (4), Monica Borzillo (4) and Kylie Nause (3), to move to 4-1 at home on the year and defeat an Aztecs (8-2) team that not only was playing in their first true road contest of 2019, but also entered the day receiving votes in the latest Inside Lacrosse Top 20 rankings. // QUICK NOTES • Cincinnati improved to 4-5 overall and 4-1 at home in 2019 while San Diego State dropped to 8-2 overall • The all-time series is now even at 1-1 after the Aztecs won on their home turf in the first meeting back in 2012 (14-8) • The win for UC snaps a three-game losing streak with the previous three games all coming on the road • The Bearcats are now 4-1 at home this year, the third-most home wins in a season in program history • Adams scored four goals, her second-highest output of the season, while tying the single game record for free-po goals with three • Borzillo added one assist to her four goals to tie her own school record at 10 games in a row with at least on assist recorded • Nause made it four games in a row with a hat trick and also added her first career assist in the game • Jennie Finotti got into the scoring as well as she netted her first two of the year after entering the game with one in her career (2018) • Amanda Fess earned her first start of the year to mark the first time the Fess Triplets have started the same game together • Giuliana Durso had a big day in goal as she stopped 10 shots and recorded a career-best seven ground balls // HOW IT HAPPENED For the second game in a row, one team got off to a hot scoring start, but this time, it was Cincinnati as the Bearcats scored the first three goals for an early 3-0 lead after Borzillo, Nause and Adams each found the back of the cage. The Aztecs scored two of their own to cut the lead to one (3-2), but UC responded with two in a row of its own as Borzillo and Adams found the scoring touch again. After another SDSU goal made it 5-3, Sam Mlkvy scored on a pass from Nause - her first collegiate assist - before Adams tallied her third free-position goal of the first half to end the scoring in the opening stanza with UC on top, 7-3. Following the halftime break, the visitors struck first before Nause and Borzillo scored once again to make it 9-4. The Aztecs answered back with one of their own (9-5) before Finotti stepped in and scored on back-to-back possessions, including tallying her second on a free-position attempt. With the score 13-5, SDSU scored twice in a row to cut the lead back to six (13-7) before UC ran off three of its own as Donovan, Borzillo and Jayde Sains each scored to put the Bearcats back in front by nine (16-7). With 11:58 remaining, the Aztecs went on the attack and scored four in a row, bringing them to within six once again with 7:43 remaining, but the Bearcats would stand tall the rest of the way on defense, not allowing the visitors to score again while Donovan added her second to bring about the final tally, 17-11. // ALL OUT ADAMS Adams had a big showing on the day as she not only had a hat trick in the first half, but she did so scoring on all three free-position shots she took, doubling her season total in the process. Adams, who finished with four goals on the game, her second-highest output of the year (five vs. Marquette), earned a played in the UC single-game record book as she tied the mark for made free-position shots in a game, accomplishing the feat for the ninth time in program history and the second time this year after Borzillo did the same against Detroit Mercy. // BORZILLO HEATS UP One of the top scorers in program history, Borzillo had not scored in the past two games, although she did dish out nine assists. Today, she got back into the goal-scoring act as she netted four, grabbing her fifth hat trick of the season and her fourth game with four or more. Adding in her one assist, Borzillo has now tied her own school record for longest streak of games with at least one assist, tying the mark she set last year (2/16/18 through 4/4/18). // ANOTHER FOR NAUSE Once again, Nause scored a hat trick, her fourth game in a row doing so. The reigning American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week, Nause has scored 13 of her 15 goals this year in the past four games. She also added her first career assist today, setting up Mlkvy's goal late in the first half of play. // FINOTTI'S FIRST FINDS Entering the game, Finotti had just one career goal, which she scored last year. Following the game, Finotti has three career goals as she tallied back-to-back scores in just over one minute of play to record her first multiple-goal game as a UC player. The two goals also double her career points total after she had an assist earlier this season for her second career point. // A FESS-TIVAL OF STARTERS Amanda Fess was added to the starting line up today, marking her first start this year and her first since the 2017 season, her freshman campaign. What made today even more enjoyable as it marked the first time the junior has lined up with both of her sisters as starters in the same game as both Adrianna Fess and Alexandra Fess were also in the starting line up. // MORE ON HAT TRICKS With three more hat tricks recorded today, the Bearcats now have 21 on the year, tying for the second-most in a single season with the 2009 squad. UC is now just three hat tricks away from tying the single-season record of 24 set in 2017 and will have at least eight more games to try. // NEXT UP Cincinnati returns to the field Sunday at noon with Gardner-Webb visiting Gettler Stadium. Sunday also will be the team's annual Pink Game and fans are encouraged to join the Bearcats in wearing pink to the game. The first 100 fans also can pick up a free pink T-shirt and pink pom-poms at the main entrance of Gettler Stadium. // FOLLOW US GoBearcats.com is your one-stop destination for all things UC Athletics.
