nd women's lacrosse team continued its hot streak Wednesday night, upsetting a fourth-straight top-15 ranked opponent by holding off No. 8 Virginia for a 19-18 victory at Ridley Athletic Complex. Junior Taylor VanThof led the Greyhounds (4-2 overall) with a career-high six points and five goals, while freshman Elli Kluegel added a personal-best four goals. Classmate Livy Rosenzweig, playing with a faceguard through the second half, contributed four points on three goals and one assist, and also won the final draw control of the game to secure the win for Loyola. Senior Frankie Kamely rounded out the Greyhounds with hat tricks, scoring three goals, and freshman Sam Fiedler tacked on two goals. Senior Hannah Savage and junior Hannah Powers had one goal and one assist each. Sammy Mueller and Maggie Jackson led Virginia (5-2) with six points each, with Mueller scoring five goals and Jackson adding four. Avery Shoemaker also contributed four goals. Loyola's defense forced the Cavaliers into a possession clock turnover on their first possession and Rosenzweig turned it into a goal at the other end, giving Loyola a 1-0 advantage at 21:46. Virginia would answer though, knotting the score for what would turn into the first of six tie scores which eventually led to an even 6-6 score at the 8:57. It was VanThof who scored the equalizer for the Greyhounds and she added a second-straight to put Loyola in the lead, 7-6, which sparked a six-goal run for the Greyhounds. Kamely, Rosenzweig and Fiedler added first half goals to secure a 10-6 halftime advantage for Loyola, while Kluegel's goal at the 28:58 mark of the second half gave the Greyhounds their largest lead of the game, 11-6. The Cavaliers, held scoreless for the final 10:12 of the first half, would break their scoreless streak at the 28:29 mark of the second and then add a second goal to pull within three, at 11-8. Kluegel's free-position goal held Virginia from getting any closer than that, but a three-goal run by the Cavaliers saw them cut their deficit to one, 12-11, at the 21:45 mark. VanThof scored Loyola's next two goals, at 19:36 and 18:04, but Virginia answered each of them to stay within one, 13-12, with 17:27 to play. The Greyhounds continued to work, with Powers assisting Fielder to give Loyola the two-goal advantage at 16:47, but back-to-back Cavalier goals evened the game at 15 with 13:18 on the clock. Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Larsson, ILWomen's National Rookie of the Week, entered the game after Shoemaker's free-position goal at 12:22 put Virginia ahead by one, 16-15, and her save on Jackson's shot sparked Loyola's next goal. Senior Margaret Filippelli secured the loose ball and ran the length of the field, where she found Savage for the game-tying goal, at 11:18. Kamely regained the lead for Loyola with a highlight-reel goal at the 7:06 mark, but the Cavaliers pulled even for a ninth time, at 17-17. Free position goals from Kamely and Kluegel at 3:44 and 1:21 regained a two-goal lead for Loyola, but Shoemaker got the Cavaliers within one, with 51 seconds to play. Rosenzweig won the ensuing draw control and Powers maintained possession through the final seconds to help Loyola hold on for the win. With the win, Loyola now owns eight victories over the Cavaliers while they've been ranked in the top-10 nationally. It's also the eighth time in the last nine meetings that the underdog has been victorious in the Loyola-Virginia series. The Greyhounds will return to action on Saturday when they open Patriot League play against Army West Point. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. at Ridley Athletic Complex.
