CINCINNATI - Nine different players scored at least one goal and four of those individuals tallied hat tricks as the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team exploded for 22 goals for the second time this year as the Bearcats handed visiting Gardner-Webb a 22-9 defeat Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium. Monica Borzillo netted a team-high six goals while Kylie Nause (four), Alyssa Adams (three) and Gianna Napoletano (three) all added hat tricks for the Bearcats (5-5) while Abby Hanscom led the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs (5-5) with four. // QUICK NOTES • Cincinnati, winners of two in a row, improved to 5-5 overall while Gardner-Webb fell to 5-5 on the year • UC moved to 3-0 all-time in the series and 2-0 in the Queen City after winning at home in 2017, 20-9 • The Bearcats swept the weekend with wins of 17-11 (San Diego State) and 22-9 (GWU) • UC is now 5-1 at home this year, tying for the most home wins in program history with the 2013 and 2018 squads • On a team level, the Bearcats' 22 goals ties a single-game program record for the second time this year (vs. Marquette, 2/15/18) while the 32 points secured tied for the second-most in a single game, just two off the all-time record of 34 (vs. Marquette) • UC also posted all-time Top 10 marks in draw controls (#2), shots (#5) and assists (#7) • Individually, four players recorded hat tricks with Borzillo (6), Nause (4), Adams (3) & Napoletano (3) grabbing the distinction • With those hat tricks, UC players have recorded 25 hat tricks this year, the most in a single season in UC history with seven regular season games left to play in 2019 • Borzillo scored nine points, the fourth-most in a single game at UC, while her six goals ranks tied for fifth in a single game • Nause's hat trick is her fifth in a row, giving her 16 goals in the last five games after scoring just two in her first five, and added her second career assist to give her a career-high five points • Mlkvy ended the game with eight ground balls, the seventh-best total in a game in UC history, while also collecting six draw controls • Giuliana Durso (five saves) and Madison Foery (one) combined to limit a team to under 10 goals for the third time this season • Three freshmen made their debuts in the game, including Brooke Holmstrom, Isabelle LeJeune and Anna Platou // HOW IT HAPPENED Despite winning the opening draw and getting a shot off, the Bearcats trailed 1-0 early as GWU scored first in the opening minute of play. UC responded in a big way, however, as five different players scored, including Taylor Gysin, Amanda Donovan, Adams, Nause and Borzillo, to put UC on top, 5-1. The goal for Borzillo goes down as the 900th home goal scored in program history. After the Bearcats' five-goal run was halted by a Runnin' Bulldogs goal, UC responded by scoring the next five in a row to make it 10-2 with 13:09 remaining in the half. In the second run, goals were scored by Borzillo (three), Adams and Mlkvy. The visitors answered with three goals of their own to make 10-5 with 10:40 remaining before the Bearcats closed out the half with their third, five-goal run of the game, to make it 15-5 at the break. The last run of the half saw Napoletano net all three of her goals with Kate Carney and Jayde Sains each adding one goal. Following the intermission, GWU cut the UC advantage to eight (15-7) before UC responded with its fourth, five-goal spree of the day, this time seeing both Nause and Borzillo bagging two goals each and Mlkvy adding her second. The Runnin' Bulldogs would bookend the final two goals scored by UC - Adams and Nause - to close out the game with the Bearcats winning by 13, the seventh-largest margin of victory in program history. // WRECKING RECORDS As a team, the Bearcats' offensive performance today ranks highly in several categories. The 22 goals scored ties the program's single-game record for the second time this year after UC scored 22 against Marquette (2/15/18) to tie the mark originally set against Presbyterian (3/17/13). Additionally, the 13-goal margin of victory is the seventh-highest in a game for UC. The Bearcats tallied 32 points to tie for the second-most in a game (vs. Butler, 4/1/17) while sitting just behind the 34 tallied against Marquette earlier this year, while the 10 assists recorded today rank as the seventh-most in a game. UC's 40 shots fired ties for the fifth-best in program history as well. // QUITE A DRAW Another Top 10 mark recorded came in draw controls as UC tallied 21, the second-highest total in a game behind the 26 the Bearcats recorded at Presbyterian Feb. 26, 2012. The 21 draws also mark just the third time the Bearcats have tallied 20 or more in a contest. // MONSTER MONICA Borzillo continued her hot streak going once again today as she netted six goals and added three assists for nine points, the fourth-highest point total in a single game in UC history. In fact, her point total marks the sixth time in her career she has recorded nine or in a single game, including the third time this year, while only one other player has accomplished the feat once previously. Her first goal of the day gave UC 900 home goals in program history while her first assist made it 11 games in a row with at least one helper, the longest streak in program history. // BOSS NAUSE Nause, the reigning AAC Freshman of the Week, pieced together another big game as the rookie tallied a career-high five points on four goals and one assist. After scoring just two goals in her first have games, Nause has scored 17 in her last five outings and recorded hat tricks in all five as well as her four goals tied a career-best. She also added an assist, the second of her career. // ADAMS KEEPS FIRING Adams scored a three-goal hat trick on the day, giving her seven goals in the past two games. She added a team-high-tying six draw controls on the day while going 2-for-2 in free-position shots, which brought her weekend total to a perfect 5-for-5 at the arc. // NAPOLETANO NETTING Napoletano scored three goals in the game to net her second hat trick of the season and bring her 2019 goal total to 12. Those 12 goals tied her previous two seasons combined after she scored four as a freshman and eight last year as a sophomore. // DUKES DIGGING IN While the offensive numbers have been large lately, so has the play of the UC defense. One of the standouts has been Morgan Dukes who collected six ground balls and caused three turnovers today while helping disrupt the GWU attack and allowing just nine goals. For the weekend, Dukes combined to record eight ground balls and five caused turnovers as UC swept both contests. // HAT TRICK UPDATE With four more hat tricks today, the Bearcats have recorded 25 for the season, the most in a single campaign with seven more games to play in the regular season. The previous record of 24 was set in 2014 with the 2009 (21) and 2018 (20) teams being the only others to have the individual players combine for 20 or more hat tricks in a single season. // DEBUTANTES Three rookies saw their first action for the Bearcats, including Holmstrom, LeJeune and Platou. Holmstrom and Platou each fired their first collegiate shots while LeJeune recorded her first caused turnover and first ground ball as well. // NEXT UP Cincinnati returns to action Saturday with UConn visiting Gettler Stadium for an 11 a.m. start. The game will be the first American Athletic Conference game started in the history of the league with Florida at Temple starting at noon that same day.
