CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team closed out its home schedule in style Saturday as the Bearcats battled to an 18-15 win over visiting Vanderbilt to remain in contention for the American Athletic Conference crown while moving to 4-0 in league play and 10-5 overall as nine different players scored at least one goal in the victory at Gettler Stadium on Senior Day. Amanda Donovan, Sam Mlkvy and Kylie Nause each recorded hat tricks while Monica Borzillo, Alyssa Adams and Kate Carney each chipped in two to help UC to its record seventh win in a row while sending the Commodores to a 10-4 record and 2-2 in the AAC standings. // QUICK NOTES • Cincinnati won its seventh game in a row to move to 10-5 overall and 4-0 in the AAC while Vanderbilt fell to 10-4 and 2-2 in the AAC • At 4-0 in league play, the Bearcats will now play at #18 Florida (4-0) next Saturday for the regular season conference title • UC's seven-game winning streak is the longest in program history, surpassing the six won in a row last year • Already holders of the record for most wins in a season at nine, the Bearcats' 10th win today marked the first time the team has won double-digit games in a season in the 12-year history of the program • The Bearcats finished the regular season home slate with a 9-1 record, rebounding from a loss to Ohio State in the opener to click off nine wins in a row at Gettler Stadium, the most in a single season at home and equaling the total wins at home of the past two years • UC is 4-0 in the AAC and 3-0 in league games played at home, giving them the most home conference wins in a season in program history, surpassing the two win in 2017 • The Bearcats' four wins in the AAC this year equals the total number of conference victories the program had heading into the season • With the win over the Commodores, UC defeated a league foe at home in back-to-back games for the first time in program history after defeating VU, 10-9, in 2017 • The 2019 senior class has now won 28 games in their UC careers, the most of any senior class in program history • Speaking of broken records, the team broke four season records following today's performance, including season goals (218), assists (91), points (309) and caused turnovers (194) with the previous marks being recorded last year (201, 86, 287 and 187) • Several individual records were broken today as well, including Borzillo taking the single-season goals (49), assists (39) and points (88) marks, Mlkvy with the draw controls record (81) and Giuliana Durso with the goalie wins record (10) • Speaking of Durso, she won her 18th career game in goal, tying the record for wins with Meg Gulmi (2013-16) • The century mark was hit by several players in different categories, including Borzillo reaching 100 career assists, Donovan (102) and Mlkvy (100) reaching 100 points, Morgan Dukes reaching 100 ground balls (100) and Donovan reaching 100 draw controls (100) • In individual game records, Mlkvy's 10 draw controls won tied for the fourth-most in a single game at UC and marked her second double-digit total this year after grabbing 11 against Ohio State in the season opener • As a team, the Bearcats joined three lists today as their 26 points tied for the 11th-most in single game; the 18 goals scored tied for the 10th-most in a game and marked the sixth time UC has scored 18 or more this year; and the 20 draw controls registered rank tied for tied for the third-most in a single game after recording 21 earlier this year // HOW IT HAPPENED The Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Gysin' first of the game before VU tied the game with 22:32 remaining. From there, the Bearcats would score the next four goals to take a 5-1 lead as Adams, Nause, Jayde Sains and Borzillo each scored to build the lead. But, the Commodores answered back as they scored the next four, tying the game at 5-5 with 6:16 remaining. UC responded, however, as it scored the final four goals of the half to give UC a 9-5 lead at the break. UC added to its lead early in the second half with the first two goals of the half before the Commodores and Bearcats traded two goals for one as the visitors scored three sets of two goals with UC scoring once between each of those, leaving the score at 14-11 with 6:56 remaining. After a VU goal made it 14-12 with 5:30 remaining, the Bearcats responded and put the game away as they scored three in a row to take a 17-12 lead with 3:56 remaining. VU would score three of the final four goals to bring about the final score, 18-15. // CONFERENCE IMPLICATIONS With UC and UF both winning today, each team will head into next Saturday's meeting in Gainesville with identical 4-0 records in the AAC. The winner of the game will be crowned the inaugural champion of the American and earn the top seed in the AAC Tournament that UC will host at Sheakley Athletics Center May 2 and 4 while the losing team will earn the second seed. VU and Temple, who defeated ECU today, will round out the four-team field in Cincinnati in two weeks. // TOP OF THE HEAP Borzillo finished the day with two goals and three assists for five points, all of which pushed her higher up several charts in UC history. On the single-season charts, Borzillo now has 49 goals, 39 assists and 88 points this year, all of which are UC records. For her career, Borzillo reached the 100 assist mark to extend her career record while also adding to her career points record at 230. She now has 130 goals to her credit, 23 off the all-time mark of 153 scored by Laura Simanski (2009-12). // SAM'S STRONG SHOWING Mlkvy, the reigning AAC Midfielder of the Week, continued to play a big role in UC's success as the junior scored three goals, chipped in one assist and collected 10 draw controls, the fourth-most in a single game in program history. With her statistics today, Mlkvy brought her career totals to 100 points even (76 goals, 24 assists) while also moving to 101 career ground balls. The 10 draw controls helped her to 81 for the season, the most in season in UC history and the first time a Bearcats player has recorded 70 or more and 80 or more in single season. // DONOVAN'S HUNDREDS Speaking of the century mark, Donovan got in on the act in two categories herself. For the day, the senior recorded five points on three goals and two assists, tying for the team lead in both goals and points. For her career, Donovan now has 102 points (73-29) and 100 draw controls. // NAUSE GRABS ANOTHER HAT Rookie Nause returned to the hat trick group once again as her three goals and one assist earned her the eighth hat trick of her young career while bringing her season total to 32 goals, the 11th-best total in a single season. Nause continues to lead all freshmen in the AAC in both goals and points (36). // FESS FORCING TURNOVERS Adrianna Fess had a strong game on defense for the Bearcats as she collected four ground balls and added three caused turnovers, which tied her career high for the fourth time this year. The last time she recorded a trio of caused turnovers was last week against Temple as UC defeated the Owls for the first time in program history. // DURSO GETTING WINS Durso now holds a 10-3 record on the year, which breaks her own single-season wins record for a goalie that she set last year with eight wins. Durso, who recorded eight saves on the day, now has 18 wins in her career, which is one shy of the all-time record of 18 earned by Meg Gulmi (2013-16). // NEXT UP The final two games of the regular season await the Bearcats on the road next week as they will travel to Florida for both games. First, UC will face Stetson in Deland, Fla., for a 3 p.m. game Thursday before heading to Gainesville, Fla., for the title tilt with the Gators at noon Saturday.
