The No. 13 Navy women's lacrosse team (10-3) picked up its third win in program history against a ranked opponent as the Midshipmen knocked off No. 11 Virginia (8-6) on Wednesday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. In addition, the win was the Mids' fourth all-time against a member of the ACC. "It is a great victory for Navy women's lacrosse," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "I proud of our team, knowing how tough Virginia is. We've been blessed to have them on our schedule. Our players rose to the occasion. We had a hard-luck loss on Saturday. It wasn't about Saturday's loss, it was about us moving on and moving forwards against Virginia tonight. It was needed tonight because we had to play all the way through to the very end." In a game that had the makings of a shootout, the Navy defense came up big to give the Midshipmen the victory. The defense surrendered just one goal in the final 21:57 minutes of the game. Goalie Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.) recorded 10 saves in the game, marking the third time she notched double-digit stops against the Cavaliers. The Navy backline caused nine of Virginia's 16 turnovers on the night with Blake Smith (Sykesville, Md.) and Marie Valenti (Bechtelsville, Pa.) leading the charge with two caused turnovers apiece. The Mids finished the game with 21 ground balls, including a program record eight GBs by Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.). Offensively, Julia Collins (Clarksville, Md.) paced the team with seven points, scoring three goals with four assists. Kelly Larkin (Alexandria, Va.) led the team with four goals, while Meg O'Donnell (Forest Hill, Md.) also notched a hat trick with three goals. Andie O'Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) chipped in three assists and a goal for four points as well, while Natalie Irwin (Annandale, Va.) and Kayla Harris (Annapolis, Md.) each added two goals apiece. Jenna Collins and O'Sullivan led the team with three draw controls each out of Navy's 15 on the night. The first half was a game of runs. Navy started the game with a 4-0 run to take the early lead. O'Donnell opened the scoring with a behind the back goal off an O'Sullivan pass. Irwin followed with back-to-back goals and Harris completed the run with her first of the night. Virginia responded, netting six of the next seven goals. After consecutive goals by the Cavaliers, Larkin found the back of the net to keep the Navy advantage at 5-2. UVA followed with four straight goals to take their first lead of the night at 6-5. The Midshipmen closed out the half, netting three of the final four goals to take an 8-7 advantage into halftime. O'Donnell scored to knot the game at 6-6, but the Hoos followed with a goal to regain the lead. O'Donnell once again tied the score with 1:45 to play in the half. With 15 ticks on the clock, Julia Collins found the back of the net to give the Midshipmen the advantage at the half. Combing out of the break, Virginia scored three of the first four goals to take a 10-9 lead. After surrendering a goal, Larkin gave the Mids a 9-8 lead, but two quick goals by the Cavaliers made the score 10-9 in favor of the visitors. Navy responded with three goals to move in front 12-10. Julia Collins provided assists on goals by Harris and O'Sullivan to give the Midshipmen the lead back. Larkin converted an O'Sullivan pass to push the lead to two. Virginia used a free-position goal to trim the deficit, but Larkin answered with an unassisted goal to make it 13-11. The Cavaliers cut the margin to one with just under 22 minutes on the clock, but the Navy defense stepped up and allowed just one goal over the final 21:57. The defense held Virginia scoreless for over 19 minutes, allowing the Navy offense to get a pair of goals from Julia Collins to increase the advantage to 15-12. UVA scored a goal with 2:36 to play, but Jenna Collins scored a goal with 40 seconds remaining to provide the final margin of 16-13. Over the final 21:57 of game, Virginia scored one goal on eight shots with three shots on goal. Boyum notched a pair of critical saves. Flustered by the Mids' defense, the Cavaliers committed seven of their 16 turnovers in the final 21:57 of the second half. Navy returns to action this weekend as the Midshipmen travel north to West Point, N.Y. for a game against rival Army. The game, which is a doubleheader with the Navy men's lacrosse team, will be the first ever for the Mids in the Star Series presented by USAA. The prior meetings between the Midshipmen and Black Knights did not count towards the overall Star standings. Opening draw is slated for 3:00 p.m. and live stats and video will be available.
