CHAPEL HILL— Andie Aldave scored a season-high five goals for the second-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team in a 17-10 win over Jacksonville on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Dorrance Field. Aldave, a graduate transfer from Notre Dame, set a season high with her five goals and five points. Roommate and fellow graduate transfer Sam Geiersbach (from Richmond) also posted her best game as a Tar Heel with four goals and an assist. Four Tar Heels recorded hat tricks or more on the day for the first time since the 2021 ACC Tournament quarterfinals. Scottie Rose Growney had three goals and two assists, while Ally Mastroianni had three goals, one assist and a game-high eight draw controls. Jamie Ortega tallied one goal, two assists and a caused turnover while excelling in a playmaking role to beat double-teams. Ortega has scored at least one goal in 39 consecutive games and recorded at least one point in 68 consecutive games. Caitlyn Wurzburger added a goal and two assists with two ground balls. Melissa Sconone had an assist. Sarah Elms had a game-high six points on five goals and an assist for the Dolphins. UNC's defense played well, as the Tar Heels led, 15-5, after three quarters when they began to sprinkle in more substitutes on a muddy, slippery day in Chapel Hill. Both teams took 30 shots. "We've had a really challenging stretch," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "This is our fifth game and we're coming off some difficult travel the last couple of games, so I challenged our team to be sharp and focused and execute well. I thought we did a really good job of that through three quarters, when the score was 15-5." Taylor Moreno (5-0) started in goal for Carolina and picked up the win, improving to 53-6 in her career and adding to her school-record win total. She made 11 saves and allowed seven goals in 53:22 of action. Alecia Nicholas allowed three goals in the final 6:38. "Overall, our midfield, defense and offense did a great job. I think there are still things we can get better at and sharpen up, but I think it was a really good team win. Specifically, I liked what we did on offense. It was very cohesive, efficient and we got high-quality looks on cage, which is our goal." The Tar Heels will host Northwestern next Sunday (March 6) in their next outing. Notes: • Carolina won for the 32nd time in its last 33 games. • UNC scored double-figure goals for the 41st time in its last 42 games. • Taylor Moreno improved her career record in goal to 53-6. She has started 59 consecutive games in the cage. • Jamie Ortega extended her goal streak to 39 consecutive games • Ortega has tallied at least one point in 68 consecutive games and 73 of 74 in her career. • Ortega extended her own school record for points by upping her total to 376. She also moved into third place in ACC history in career points, passing Virginia's Amy Appelt (373 from 2002-05). Sam Apuzzo of Boston College (397) is second with 397. Jen Adams of Maryland (1998-2001) is first with 445. • Ally Mastroianni had eight draw controls vs. Jacksonville and has 11 in her last two games.
