JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In a rematch of last year's ASUN Conference Tournament championship, the Jacksonville University women's lacrosse team picked up right where it left off with a 15-11 victory over league rival Coastal Carolina, Friday evening at D.B. Milne Field. "It was a game of possession today; winning the draws was big to keep our pace. McKenna [Rushford] and Molly [Brock] were great on the draw. We struggled shooting a little bit; [Coastal Carolina goalkeeper] Haley Barrett played a great game. She's a tough goalie to shoot on and she made us work for our goals," commented head coach Mindy McCord following the game. Led by four points each from junior McKenna Rushford (3 goals, 1 assist) and senior captain Lillie Miller (3g, 1a), the Dolphins (9-2, 2-0 ASUN) held a 4-0 advantage with 13:23 showing in the first half. After the Chanticleers (7-4, 2-2 ASUN) rallied back with a 4-0 run of their own to tie the game, Jacksonville closed out the half with goals from sophomores Megan Prescott (1:19), Jenny Kinsey (0:57), and junior Alexis Deaken (0:16) to keep the visitors at bay, 7-4. Just 31 seconds out of the break, Miller buried a pass from Rushford before Deaken extended the Dolphins' lead to five, 9-4, with 27:43 to play. Coastal Carolina managed five of the next seven goals to bring the game within two, 11-9. However, the Dolphins posted back-to-back goals from junior Erin McGuire (10:06) and sophomore Lauren Phillips (5:55) to halt CCU's momentum. The teams traded the final four goals and the Dolphins held on for their eighth-straight win. "When we weren't shooting well, we were getting the ball back on the ride; we did great job on that unit today," McCord added. "They're a very resilient team and they never gave up. I was really proud of our defense, we held [Coastal Carolina] for the first 20 minutes without a goal. This team with their offense, that was pretty spectacular." With 12 saves and a career-high seven ground balls in the crease, freshman goalie Dayna Martinetto continued to highlight a solid Dolphin defensive unit. Rushford (7 DCs) and Brock (5 DCs) combined for 12 of the Dolphins' 17 draw controls, while Kinsey finished the day with two goals, two ground balls, and one caused turnover. The Dolphins welcome NCAA newcomer Kent State on Sunday, April 7 at noon.
