(Titan Field) DETROIT (4/20/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team battled the weather and old ASUN conference foes Coastal Carolina, falling to the visiting Chanticleers by an 8-3 margin on a soggy, rainy afternoon from Titan Field. It was the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools, which spent one year together as part of the ASUN. Senior goalkeeper Allison McDonough has strong in net all day for the Titans, which held Coastal Carolina under 10 goals for just the third time in 16 games this season. McDonough made 11 saves and also notched five ground balls, surpassing 600 career saves and 200 career ground balls in the non-league contest. Detroit Mercy (7-8 overall) got single goals from seniors Kaitlyn Wandelt and Morgan Girardi, as well as sophomore attacker Kamryn Corraro. Coastal Carolina had the shot advantage in the contest, 30-16. Detroit Mercy held the edge in draw controls (7-6), ground balls (17-16), caused turnovers (9-8) and saves (11-7). Coastal Carolina netted the first three goals of the game, scoring two minutes in to take a 1-0 lead. Neither team would score for the next 10 minutes before CCU scored its second goal of the game at the 16:44 mark of the opening half. Coastal Carolina would add another game to go ahead 3-0 with 14:23 left before the halftime break. The Titans scored two of the final three goals of the first half with Wandelt scoring with 8:26 left before halftime. Girardi then scored her 28th goal of the season just before the halftime break, scoring 27:24 into the game. At the halftime break, Detroit Mercy was down by just two goals, 4-2. The Chanticleers opened the second half on a 2-0 run to take a 7-2 advantage with 10:31 remaining. Corraro scored her 29th goal of the 2019 season and the lone Detroit Mercy goal of the second half at the 8:44 mark to cut the deficit to 7-3, but Coastal Carolina closed out the scoring with one more goal. Freshman midfielder Taryn McManus tallied three ground balls and a team-best two caused turnovers in the game. Detroit Mercy had nine caused turnovers in the game from eight different players. Wandelt and senior defender Alex McCafferty both added two ground balls for the red, white and blue. Wandelt had five of the seven Detroit Mercy draw controls, becoming the first player in school history to go over 100 draw controls in a single season. Freshman midfielder Elise Harder and sophomore attacker Kristina Ellis each added one draw control. Girardi led the team with eight shots, while Wandelt had four shots. Both teams finished the game 18-for-22 on clears. Up Next Detroit Mercy returns to the field Tuesday, hosting No. 8-ranked University of Michigan for a 5:30 p.m. ET contest from Titan Field.
