HAMILTON – The Colgate women's lacrosse program opened Patriot League play on a snowy Saturday afternoon against No. 13 Navy. Despite five different goal-scorers stepping up for the Raiders, the Midshipmen claimed the league opener by an 18-6 score. Although Navy was first to get on the board, Lindsay West tied the game for the Raiders by notching her ninth of the season from the top of the circle minutes after the opening draw. The Mids regained the lead by scoring on a free position shot before sailing ahead with a five-goal scoring run. It was when Annelise Kotz found the back of the net again for the Raiders with a low sneak past the Midshipmen's goalie that sparked Colgate's offense. After Navy built a 7-2 advantage the Raiders responded with a pair of back-to-back goals late in the half, including a low shot to the goal by Noelle Patterson with 9.5 on the clock to narrow the league game. Colgate returned for the second half facing a three-goal deficit and after back-and-forth scoring, Kyra Weiner broke away from the pack to score her first of her career fueling Colgate's second half push. Although the Raiders battled back with quick charges down the field looking to eliminate the 9-6 score, Navy ran away with nine straight goals for the 18-6 final. STATISTICAL STANDOUTS • Junior Lindsay West opened Colgate's scoring with her ninth on the season and improves to a four-game scoring streak. Additionally, West marked her second consecutive and third multi-goal game of the year. • Now on a two-game scoring streak, sophomore Annelise Kotz tallied her sixth goal of the season. • With her team-leading 15th goal of the season, junior Noelle Patterson has now scored in all eight games this season. Patterson also led the Colgate squad by winning seven draw controls. • Tallying her eighth of the season, senior Tara Atkinson scored for the first time since having a two-goal game at Wagner (March 3). • By scoring Colgate's final goal, sophomore Kyra Wiener earned her first career goal in her first game played of the year. • When facing 36 total shots, junior goalie Samantha Croston tallied 12 saves for her fourth double-digit save performance of the season. • The Raiders held the advantage in the circle, winning 15 draw controls to Navy's 11. • Also a notable performance, sophomore Danielle Van Calcar won five draw controls and recovered a team-best of three ground balls. THE BOTTOM LINE • No. 13 Navy 18, Colgate 6 RECORD UPDATES • Colgate holds a 2-6 record, and a 0-1 mark in Patriot League action. • No. 13 Navy is 6-2 overall on the season, and is now 1-0 in Patriot League play. COACH BEVILLE'S TAKE "I'm very proud of the way our team played for the first 30 minutes today. We were connecting on both ends of the field and competing on the draw circle. In the second half we struggled with turnovers and Navy proved why they are No. 13 in the country and a national contender." UP NEXT Colgate hits the road to Worcester, Massachusetts, next weekend as it faces Holy Cross on Saturday, March 23. First draw is set for 2 p.m. in the continued Patriot League play. The Raiders next return home on March 30 as they host Bucknell.
