NEW YORK – After trailing by as many as four in the second half, the Columbia lacrosse team staged a comeback with four-straight goals, but it wasn't quite enough as the Lions were edged by Fairfield, 14-12, on a snowy Wednesday afternoon at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium. Sophomore midfielder Alison Schwasnick had a career day in the outing, scoring a career-high three goals and dishing out her first career assist for a team-leading four points. Senior midfielder Lindsey Ewertsen, junior midfielder Fallon Quinn and sophomore attacker Alexandria Absey also contributed a pair goals each. After the Stags opened up the scoring, Columbia (1-1) responded with three consecutive goals to take an early 3-1 lead with huge help from Schwasnick as she sent in a pair of early scores. The Lions struggled to keep the offensive momentum though, as Fairfield (3-0) closed out the half with six straight goals of their own to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Out of the locker room, Absey helped the Lions rediscover their footing, converting on back-to-back free position shots to cut the Stags' lead in half. Fairfield would again stretch its lead to four, until Quinn ignited a Columbia comeback at the 13:06 mark off an assist from senior attacker Emily Manville. In less than three minutes of action, the Lions quickly wiped away Fairfield's lead as Quinn posted the game-tying goal with 11:28 to play. After Evertsen was accessed a yellow card with 10:14 on the clock, the Stags used the advantage to score a man-up goal and the Lions would not recover. Manville matched her career assist mark from the season opener, faciliting on three assists to go with one goal. Senior midfielder Orna Madigan and junior midfielder Regan Steed also net goals in the game. In the record books, Evertsen moved into second all-time in career draw controls with a total of 166 after grabbing seven against Fairfield, surpassing Taylor Gatinella, and extended her program-record mark to 95 caused turnovers with three today. The Lions will be back in action Friday, Feb. 22, traveling to face Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona at 6 p.m. MST. Columbia will also take on San Diego State in Tempe on Sunday at 2 p.m. MST.
