No. 2 Stony Brook women's lacrosse topped No. 5 USC, 14-10, in its 2018 season opener on Friday night at LeBard Stadium. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 1-0 (0-0 AE) so far in 2018. QUOTING HEAD COACH Joe Spallina "Huge road win for us tonight, I'm really proud of our team. There are some things we will work on, but traveling cross-country and beating the No. 5 team in the nation is a great start. All of our attention now turns to Stanford in another huge road game." Spallina on Courtney Murphy's performance: "I'm so happy for Murph. She's worked so hard to get back on the field, and to have this type of day in the opener is incredible. USC paid a ton of attention to Kylie, and Murph did a great job stepping up for us tonight." HIGHLIGHTS Courtney Murphy (Shirley, N.Y.) and Taryn Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) led the way offensively for Stony Brook, as both recorded four goals and four assists in the victory. Kylie Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) added one goal and two assists for the Seawolves. Samantha DiSalvo (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Emma Schait (Seaford, N.Y.) each scored twice, while Ally Kennedy (North Babylon, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal of her own. Anna Tesoriero (Huntington, N.Y.) was impressive in net for Stony Brook, making 10 saves and earning the victory. Stony Brook outshot USC 32-25 in total. NOTES Murphy's four scores gives her 250 career goals, needing just 40 more to break the NCAA record set by Temple's Gail Cummings (289). With two assists in the win, Kylie Ohlmiller now needs just 46 more assists to break the NCAA career record. With three total points, the senior is also 102 points away from the NCAA career record for total points – set by Maryland's Jen Adams (445). The Seawolves scored five of the game's first seven goals, leading 5-2 through 16-plus minutes in the first half of action. Murphy scored three of the program's first five goals in her return to the field. USC then cut Stony Brook's lead to just one goal, but the Seawolves tallied six-straight goals to stretch the advantage to 11-4. With the win over No. 5 USC, the Seawolves are now 9-3 in their last 12 contests vs. ranked opponents. Stony Brook went 5-2 last year vs. ranked foes. Stony Brook is now 3-1 all-time vs. USC
