SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil Women's Lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Columbia University in a closely-contested matchup on Friday evening. The game was moved from Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium to Scott Bemis Field at Scottsdale's Notre Dame Preparatory High School because of field conditions caused by recent weather. Initially, Arizona State looked comfortable in their temporary home, as the Sun Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead just over seven minutes into the game. After the Maroon and Gold entered halftime trailing by a goal, a back-and-forth second half would develop. Trailing by as many as three in the second half, the Sun Devils fought ba ck to get within one goal, but the comeback effort would fall just short. Coach Martinez Connor liked her team's fast start to the game, as they jumped on the Lions and were able to build an early lead. "I was happy with our quick start," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "However, we have to continue playing that way for the rest of the game," she added. A pair of freshmen teamed up to put the Sun Devils on the board first, as Paige McGlothlin cashed-in on a feed from Kaylon Buckner. Two goals in a 38-second span would put the Sun Devils up 3-0, as Kerri Clayton assisted on and delivered a goal of her own. Emily Glagolev's second goal of the evening would give Arizona State a 4-0 first half lead over the Lions at the 22:30 mark. Columbia would fail to score until over 10 minutes into the game, a big factor being the play of the Sun Devil defense, led by goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau. The redshirt junior posted seven first-half saves, including two on free-position shots. A string of three unanswered goals from Columbia was broken by Taylor Carson. She put the Sun Devil's back in front, 6-5, scoring off a well-placed pass from Emily Glagolev. Columbia would tally a pair of goals late in the first half to take a 7-6 lead into halftime. It took both sides some time to get back in a rhythm after the break, with the cold temperatures making an impact. Columbia's Chelsea Witteck put the first two goals of the half on the board, extending Columbia's lead to 9-6. In need of a response, Taylor Carson delivered just that, as the Sun Devil attacker cut the lead to two by putting the home side on the board for the first time in the second half. Seeing her first action of the 2019 season, Kate Doughtery made her presence felt immediately. She teamed up with Maddy Hunter for a goal that would make the score, 10-8, with the Lions remaining in front. It was the first goal for Doughtery and the first assist for Hunter on the season. The Devils weren't done there, as Taylor Carson recorded her second consecutive hat trick, with Arizona State now finding themselves trailing by just a goal. Pressure all over the field from ASU caused several Lions' turnovers, but they were unable to cash-in on the opportunities, as Columbia captured a 12-9 victory. The Sun Devils return to action on Sunday, February 24 when they host Stetson at 11 a.m. The action is scheduled to return to Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium, but be sure to pay attention to our social media platforms and visit our website for the latest updates on game location. A reminder that the Sun Devil Lacrosse coaching staff and student-athletes will be hosting a post-game clinic following Sunday's game. The clinic is open to anyone from K-8th grade and will start roughly around 1:30 p.m. More information on the clinic can be found here. NOTES: Several timely saves from Berkeley Bonneau kept the Sun Devils within striking distance in the second half…the goalkeeper finished with 12 saves on the evening…Emily Glagolev enjoyed an extremely productive evening, finishing with two goals, three assists, six ground balls and three caused turnovers…after finishing last season with 13 goals in 16 games, Taylor Carson already has six goals through two games…Kerri Clayton has now scored in all but one of her 19 games as a Sun Devil…freshman Katie Brodsky and sophomore Maura Cissel saw their first action of the season...three different Sun Devils caused multiple turnovers and six picked up multiple ground balls.
