University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse made use of stout defense by sophomore goalie Matt Knote, consistent faceoff success by Zack Hochman and four goals from rookie Dillon Arrant as UMass downed Drexel, 13-7, at Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. Massachusetts improved to 2-0 with the win, both CAA victories. Drexel fell to 1-2 overall and in league play with the loss. Knote's 20 stops marked a career-high for the sophomore. He made seven in the first quarter, six in the second, a pair during the third and closed the game with five stops in the final quarter. In addition, Knote scooped up four groundballs. Hochman provided wins in 11 of his 17 faceoffs, grabbed seven groundballs, caused one turnover and scored for the second consecutive game. Arrant scored on four of his six shots and earned his four goals exclusively during the third and fourth quarters. Graduate student midfielder and attack Devin Spencer led both sides with five points via a pair of goals and three assists. It tied Spencer's single-game personal best for points previously accomplished against Drexel on May 2, 2019 during the 2019 CAA Tournament Semifinal Round. Graduate student midfielder Jeff Trainor had four points on two goals and two assists while he caused a pair of turnovers and scooped up three groundballs. Three additional Minutemen put forth multi-point outings with a goal and assist each by Billy Philpott, Clayton Proctor and Gabriel Procyk. Kevin Cutinella also scored once while Charlie O'Brien and Mike Tobin had an assist apiece. Graduate student close defenseman Jackson Suboch posted a career-high-tying three caused turnovers and grabbed four groundballs. His close defense counterpart Sam Eisenstadt also grabbed four groundballs. Defense dominated the first quarter as Massachusetts worked to a two-goal lead. While Knote backstopped the defense, Trainor and Philpott provided veteran poise on the other end of the field for the early advantage. Trainor needed only 37 seconds to give Massachusetts the lead with his first goal of the season. Philpott doubled the advantage near the end of the frame with his third of the season at the 1-minute, 54-second mark. Spencer and Proctor offset Drexel's first goal as the duo scored back-to-back in the second quarter. Proctor finished the series with a man-advantage goal, his first tally of the year, with 9:31 to go in the quarter. Trainor fired a pass from behind the goal over the Drexel defense to Proctor's crosse. Proctor fielded the pass, stepped down and fired an attempt into the top-right corner before Dragons goalie Ross Blumenthal could react. Drexel was unable to pull closer than within three the remainder of the game as Arrant and Spencer spearheaded the second half offense with a combined eight points. Arrant got his first of the game with 2:48 to go in the third on a dunk player where he settled into an open spot in front of the cage, fielded Spencer's pass from X and dropped it into the back of the net before the Dragons could apply pressure. He later opened the fourth quarter goals barrage with back-to-back tallies separated by only 39 second of game clock. Trainor set up Arrant's second of the day when Trainor drew the defense to his left before he turned over his right shoulder and sent a pass to Arrant waiting 20 yards out from the right pipe. Arrant stepped into a lefty sidearm blast that landed just inside the left pipe with 12:55 to go. After another of Hochman's 11 faceoff victories, Tobin found Arrant 15 yards away for another sidearm shot, this one from his right. Arrant's third of the day made it 9-4 Massachusetts with 12:16 to go. Massachusetts returns to action with its first road game of the year as the Maroon and White head to UAlbany for a Tues., March 23 game at 1 p.m. Follow Massachusetts men's lacrosse on Twitter (@UMassMLacrosse), Instagram (@UMassMLAX) and Facebook (/UMassMensLacrosse).
