NEW YORK - The 12th-ranked University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team was certainly in unchartered territory heading into the weekend with back-to-back losses in conference play for just the first time since 2006, but the Quakers used a 21-7 domination of Columbia Saturday night to get back in the win column and clinch a spot in the 2019 Ivy League Tournament. Penn is now 10-4 on the year and 4-2 in the Ancient Eight, tied for third in the league standings. PENN NEWS AND NOTES *Junior midfielder Erin Barry hit a career milestone in New York, surpassing 100 career goals. Her three on the night gives her 101 for her career. *Freshman Michaela McMahon led the way for Penn with a career-high four goals on four shots. McMahon has scored in all but two of her career games this year, while fellow rookie Taylyn Stadler has scored in all but one game, matching her career high with three goals against the Lions. *Junior Gabby Rosenzweig led the Quakers in points with five, featuring two goals and three assists. *The Quakers got off to a hot start in the first half, at one point featuring an 11-0 scoring run, and finished with 15 draw controls. Zoe Belodeau paced Penn with a season-high eight. *Junior Kaeleigh Morrill scored her first collegiate goal in the second half. *Freshman Robin Panzarella boasted a career outing, netting three goals on the night. *Elyse Decker's two goals, both in the first half, push the sophomore's scoring total to seven goals in the last three games. *Penn is the only team in the Ivy League to have earned a spot in all 10 Ivy League Tournaments since its inception in 2010. The Quakers have won three tournament titles. *Penn has now won at least 10 games in seven straight seasons, marking a new program record. *The Quakers remain perfect all-time against the Lions, improving to 23-0 vs. Columbia. *The 21 goals scored for Penn are its most ever scored against Columbia. The previous high was 19. Penn has scored at least 10 goals vs. Columbia in 14-straight meetings. HOW IT HAPPENED Penn struck first, less than a minute into the game on a free position goal from Barry, but the Quakers found themselves in a deficit with over six minutes gone, as Columbia capitalized on some saves defensively to take a 2-1 lead. That lead would be short lived for the Lions, as Penn responded with a low-flying rocket from McMahon to even the game at 2-2 under a minute later. Using dominance on the draw controls, Penn's offense began to punish Columbia with a 5-0 run, including four goals in less than two minutes for the Red and Blue. Individual playmaking abilities were showcased for the Quakers, including a long run and finish from Decker from the 25-yard line. Up 6-2, Penn wasn't done there, using another solo goal from McMahon, followed by a 3-0 burst in under a minute's time to find itself up 10-2, including the 100th career score from Barry. A shot from Stadler and the first goal of the night from Belodeau enacted the running clock for the first time for Penn, and the Quakers followed up a Columbia score to break an 11-0 Penn run with two more of their own to end the half up 14-3. With some fresh faces on the field in the second half, including rookie goalkeeper Krissy Kowalski, Penn outscored Columbia 4-1 in the first portion of the second half, with freshman Panzarella asserting herself for two more goals after a tally in the first half. Using the running clock for the entirety of the second 30 minutes, Penn cruised to victory, with goals from Laura Murphy and Morrill to end the night. WHAT'S NEXT? The Quakers will round out the regular season on the road next weekend, visiting Harvard on Saturday, April 27 at 12 p.m.
