A second half surge propelled the visiting New Hampshire Wildcats past the UMBC women's lacrosse team, 11-9, on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats move to 3-5 on the season and 1-0 in America East play, while the Retrievers fall to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Retrievers held a 5-4 lead going into halftime, but freshman Kristyn Staley (Middletown, Md./Middletown) and junior Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) netted two goals to extend the lead by three. However, the Wildcats used three-straight goals to tie the game up at 7-7, before Catherine Sexton scored off an assist from Carly Wooters to give UNH an 8-7 lead with 15:06 remaining in the second half. Moeller and senior Taylor Oliver (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) each scored off a free position shot to give UMBC the 9-8 edge before Wooters scored again to tie the game back up at 9-9 with 4:57 left to play. The Wildcats netted two final goals from Elizabeth Blanding to seal the victory. UNH opened the game with a free position goal, but UMBC scored four straight from senior Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster), two from Moeller, and junior Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) to give the Retrievers a 4-1 lead. The Wildcats responded with a three-goal spurt to tie the game up 4-all, but junior Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) took a feed from Moeller with 16 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Retrievers the 5-4 lead. Moeller led all players with six points off four goals and two assists, followed by Jamison (1g,1a). McDonald's goal was her 100th of her career, making her the 19th Retriever to hit the mark. Senior Caitlin Miller (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) recorded five draw controls and five caused turnovers on the day. In goal, UNH's Kate Clancy moved to 3-4 on the season after making eight saves in 60 minutes between the pipes. For UMBC, Senior Kelsey Major (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) fell to 4-2 on the year, making 11 saves in goal. The Retrievers will close out their non-conference schedule on Wednesday, March 28 when they host the Siena Saints. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
