Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored four goals and Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) tallied a career-high 10 ground balls to lead the River Hawks against the Crimson in a 14-10 loss at Wicked Blue Field on Wednesday night. The loss moved UMass Lowell to 4-9 on the season, while Harvard improved to 4-8. With the senior captain's first goal of the night, Sokol captured the program record for most goals scored in a single season, ending the night with 29 on the year. Sokol scored the opening goal of the game thanks to a pass from Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.) with 28:31 in the first after the River Hawk defense forced a Harvard turnover. The Crimson tied the contest at one all about two minutes later from a Robyn White goal. Kaylan DiModugno (Deer Park, N.Y.) capitalized on a free position attempt to regain the River Hawk lead before Sokol recorded a hat trick after burying a pass from Cameron McKelvin (Westminster, Md.) and putting home a free position attempt of her own to make it 4-1 with 18:19 remaining in the first half. The visitors responded with a 4-0 run of their own over a span of just less than five minutes to take their first lead of the game at 5-4 with 12:40 on the clock in the first. Austin Trasatti (Doylestown, Pa.) took a pass from Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.) to quell the Crimson run and tie the tilt at five all with 10:44 remaining in the first. Trassatti then found MacEachern who buried it past the Crimson keeper to give the River Hawks their lead back at 6-5 with 7:37 remaining in the first. Harvard scored the final two goals of the half to take a 7-6 lead at the break. The Crimson came out hot in the second, taking advantage of the contest with a 4-0 run to take a five goal lead at 11-6 with 22:02 remaining in regulation. After nearly eight minutes of scoreless action, thanks to three caused turnovers and two saves from Barrett, Hana Caster (North Attleboro, Mass.) took the ball from midfield after a Barrett caused turnover, juked multiple defenders and buried a shot past the Harvard keeper. Sokol recorded her fourth goal of the night after taking a pass from Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.) and placing it past the visiting keeper. McKelvin made it a 3-0 run for the River Hawks after Finelli made another nice pass for her second assist of the night that McKelvin buried to make it a two-goal game at 11-9 with 9:51 remaining in the contest. The Crimson countered with a 3-0 run of their own to extend their lead back to five at 14-9 with 2:46 remaining. Dudley scored her first goal of the night 45 seconds later after restarting behind the net on a shot that went wide. She circled in front of the net and spun around a defender before burying a shot past the keeper to cut the deficit to 14-10 with 2:01 remaining. Barrett finished the night with 15 saves, 10 ground balls and five caused turnovers to turn in one of the best games she has had all season. The Mill City squad returns to action when they travel to New York to take on the red-hot UAlbany Great Danes. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Casey Stadium.
