DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson's program-best six-game winning streak to open the season came to an end in the closing seconds when William & Mary scored with 18 seconds to go for a 9-8 win in a tightly-played contest Thursday evening in women's lacrosse inside Richardson Stadium. W&M (4-3) got the game-winner off the stick of Belle Martire, her third score of the game, with 18 seconds left and then won the ensuing draw control to seal up the win. The Wildcats (6-1), who were off to their best start in program history, got a season-best tying four goals from Braeden Dial and dominated the shot column at 39-18 (28 on goal), but the final shot of the game for the Tribe proved to be the difference. The game featured seven lead changes and six ties, including an 8-all game with 1:47 to go in regulation when Dial netted her fourth of the game and team-leading 16th of the year to knot things up. It was her third game this year with that many goals in a game. The 'Cats had clawed back from trailing 8-6, getting a Shayne Antolini goal off a pass from Olivia Carey to make it 8-7 with 11:30 to go before Dial tied it up later. Jane Digregorio had three points on a goal and two assists, while Olivia Carey dished out two assists to give her a team-best 13. The Tribe's other multi-goal scorers were Maddie Torgerson and Meredith Hughes with two goals each. Davidson had to play catchup in the first half after scoring the opening goal at the 28:40 mark thanks to Dial's first score. William & Mary would take leads of 2-1, 3-2 and 4-2 before Digregorio made it 4-3 with a score right before halftime with two ticks remaining. The second half saw Davidson go up 6-5 at the 17:48 mark with Dial's third goal, but the Tribe countered with three straight scores over the next five minutes for an 8-6 lead. Both goalies played well between the pipes. Delaney Guhman was credited with eight saves, a groundball and a caused turnover. The Tribes' Elsa Rall answered nearly every shot Davidson took with 20 saves, while adding 10 groundballs. Davidson had advantages of 23-20 on groundballs and won the draw controls at 10-8, while going a perfect 18-for-18 on clear attempts. It was shutout on free-position attempts though, going 0-for-7. Sophia Sgroi had four draw controls followed by Sarah Kopp with three, and Natalie Junior scooped up a team-best four groundballs. Seven different 'Cats had one caused turnover each. Davidson plays at No. 15 Duke for its next contest, facing the Blue Devils Monday, March 18, at 4 p.m.
