DAVIDSON, N.C. — Massachusetts had seven multi-goal scorers and used a 9-2 run in the first half to pull away as Davidson fell 20-9 in its Atlantic 10 opener Friday night under the lights at Richardson Stadium. The Wildcats fell to 6-3 with their third defeat in a row, while UMass moved to 6-3 overall. The 'Cats fell to 2-3 in A-10 openers and 2-2 when opening league play at home since joining the A-10 in 2014-15. The Minutewomen scored two quick goals less than a minute into the game and then broke it open in the final 21 minutes of the first half by pushing a 6-3 lead into a 15-5 halftime advantage on their 9-2 run and the 'Cats were never able to recover. Sam Rippley had answered UMass' quick scores with her 14th goal of the season at the 28:21 mark to make it 2-1. Then, Sophia Sgroi and Braeden Dial netted back-to-back scores to get the Wildcats within three at 6-3 and 21:30 on the clock, but it was as close as they could get. UMass' Cassidy Doster had a game-high five goals, while Kaitlyn Cerasi recorded five points on two goals and three assists. Haley Connaughton, Stephanie Croke and Hannah Palau each had two goals and an assist. Dial finished with three points on two goals and an assist, pushing her season points total to a team-best 25 (19 goals, 6 assists). Sarah Kopp and Shannon Blee each scored twice, with Blee's two goals coming in the final eight minutes when Davidson closed on a strong note with four-straight goals, three of them on free-position shots. Emily Weld scored one of the goals during the 4-0 run, giving her 14 on the season and added an assist for two points on the night. The shot count went to UMass, 35-20, as did groundballs (20-13). Davidson had a 16-15 edge on draw controls and both teams hit four free-position shots. Goalie Delaney Guhman had a team-best four groundballs to go with her seven saves. Kopp forced two of the 'Cats' four caused turnovers, while she added five draw controls. Sgroi hauled in a team-high seven draw controls. Davidson finishes out a busy week with a 1 p.m. home game Sunday vs. A-10 foe George Washington.
