Fourth-ranked James Madison had 11 goal scorers and 13 players tallied at least a point, as the Dukes rolled to a 15-5 women's lacrosse victory against UC Davis on Wednesday evening at Sentara Park. JMU improved to 9-1 on the year, while the Aggies' record was evened to 4-4. Four players scored twice for the Dukes, as freshman attacker Katie Checkosky has two goals and an assist, and senior midfielder Haley Warden, sophomore midfielder Halle Duenkel and freshman midfielder Daria Lucchesi each had two goals. Junior attacker Hanna Haven matched Checkosky with three points off a goal and two helpers. The Dukes dominated in nearly every area, out-shooting UC Davis 34-14, including a 25-10 mark in shots on goal. JMU also had leads in caused turnovers (15-8) and ground balls (23-16) while committing 11 fewer turnovers (15-26). Defensively, Warden and senior midfielder Elena Romesburg each had nine hustle stats. Warden finished with four caused turnovers, three draws and two ground balls, and Romesburg tied her career high with five ground balls, to go with two caused turnovers and a pair of draws. Senior defender Corinne Schmidt notched a career-best three caused turnovers and three ground balls, and Duenkel added two caused turnovers. UC Davis was paced by Anna Hofgard's two goals, while Mar Alvear won a game-high six draw controls. The Dukes opened the game strong, scoring eight of the first nine goals in just over 15 minutes. JMU took an early 4-0 lead 10 minutes in off a pair of assisted goals and two free-position scores. After the Aggies scored their first tally, JMU scored four more in a span of less than three minutes to up the lead to seven, eventually leading 11-3 at the break. JMU scored seven straight to bridge the halves, holding UC Davis without a goal for 31 minutes. JMU's defense swarmed the Aggies all over the field, holding them without a single shot for nearly 22 minutes and a shot on goal for 28:20 between the first and second halves. RUNNING THE CLOCK JMU utilized a 7-0 run in a 20-minute span between the first and second frames to build a 12-goal lead and activate the running clock. JMU's 10-goal victory was the largest at home this year and the third double-digit triumph of 2018, joining the neutral-site win against UConn (21-9) and a road win at Temple (19-7). SPREADING THE LOVE JMU had a season-high 11 goal scorers and 13 point getters, as all 31 healthy players played in Wednesday's win against UC Davis. JMU had eight of its 11 goals off the bench in the first half, and the non-starters combined for nine goals and two assists in the victory. UP NEXT JMU has the weekend off and opens Colonial Athletic Association play on Friday, April 6 when it hosts Delaware at Sentara Park. The opening draw is set for a 5 p.m. start.
