UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Spiders fell behind early to visiting Davidson, but a 7-2 run to end the first half and a 10-2 run in the second was enough to give Richmond an 18-11 win at Robins Stadium on Friday afternoon. Sam Geiersbach led the way offensively with five goals and a pair of assists for seven points, while Katie Sciandra also finished with five goals and Madison Ostrick tallied a hat trick. Geiersbach's fourth goal of the day was the 100th of her career in just 35 games played. Davidson scored the opening three goals before Sciandra stopped the run with 23:28 to play in the half. Two more Wildcat goals would put the visitors up 5-1, but the Spiders answered with a trio of goals from Marissa Brown, Sciandra and Aly Fries to make it a one-goal game. After Davidson scored again to go up two with 12:26 remaining in the half, the Spiders went on another three-goal run with a pair of goals from Geiersbach and one from Ostrick to take their first lead of the game. The Wildcats tied the game with just over two minutes to play, but Mia Castagnero answered with an impressive low-to-low goal with 28 seconds remaining to give the Spiders the 8-7 advantage at the break. Davidson came out firing again in the second half, tallying the first two goals, before the Spiders went on a 7-0 run over the next nine minutes to go up 15-9. Geiersbach scored three goals in the run, while Sciandra and Ostrick each tallied two. The Wildcat offense stepped up to score the next two goals, but it wasn't enough, as Richmond closed the game with another 3-0 run to seal the win. Sciandra, Castagnero and Lauren Kingsbury each scored in the run. The Spiders finished the game with a 32-19 advantage in shots, holding Davidson to just eight shots in the second half. The defense caused a season-high 19 turnovers on the day, led by Julie Ball with five. Ball also collected a career-high 10 ground balls, coming up just one short of the program single-game record set back in 1994. Gianforte logged seven saves in goal while collected three ground balls. Richmond returns to action on Sunday, April 14, when they travel to Amherst, Mass., to face UMass. The matchup – the first between the two since last season's A-10 Title game which the Spiders win in overtime – is set to start at 1 p.m.
