Despite a huge advantage in shots on goal, Temple lacrosse was unable to convert on enough opportunities in a 7-4 loss to visiting Delaware (1-0) in the season opener for both teams. Keys to the Game > The Owls (0-1) had 24 shots on goal to the Blue Hens' 13, but Delaware goalkeeper Kate Brewster made 20 saves to frustrate Temple for most of the game. > Temple held Delaware scoreless in the second half, but was only able to get one goal closer after trailing 7-3 at halftime. > Draw controls hurt the Owls in the first half, with Delaware getting eight to Temple's three. Individual Highlights > Junior Maddie Gebert scored twice for Temple, with senior Olivia Thompson and sophomore Jen Rodzewich also netting one goal each. > Senior Amber Lambeth assisted on two of the Owls' goals, while junior Julia Ryan also notched an assist. > In goal for the Owls was junior Maryn Lowell who made six saves. > Delaware's Christine Long had a hat trick with three goals and also tallied one assist. Game Summary > Temple struck first in the second minute of action with the goal by Rodzewich, but Delaware answered with back-to-back goals. > Gebert's goal with 20 minutes left in the first half tied the game at 2-2, and each team scored one more over the next few minutes to make it 3-3 at 17:21. > Over the final 12 minutes of the opening period, Delaware rattled off four straight goals for a 7-3 halftime advantage. > Gebert's unassisted second goal midway through the first half was the only one scored by either team. > The Owls forced 17 turnovers on Delaware in the second half and took 15 total shots, but were unable to narrow the gap any further. Quotable - Temple Head Coach Bonnie Rosen > "I think it was a good battle. I kind of characterize it as the things we did to hurt ourselves a little bit today. I certainly credit Delaware's goalie for making the stops. When you make 20 saves it's hard to put the ball in the net. But overall I think today was a little bit of a tale of us still not doing the little things that we know how to do well and we're learning to do well right now." "I was really proud of the defensive effort of our attack all the way back to our goalie. We caused a ton of turnovers in transition and really tightened play up and gave ourselves opportunities. But we wasted a lot of those with shots that maybe weren't the most high-percentage shots and some turnovers." Up Next > Temple will travel to Rutgers for a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
