The Explorers suffered a close loss to Delaware at McCarthy Stadium on Tuesday. In a much improved display from Saturday's loss to Manhattan, La Salle went toe-to-toe with the Blue Hens until the game escaped them in the final ten minutes. HOW IT HAPPENED Just over one minute into the match, Delaware struck first through junior Sarah Bedard. Shortly thereafter sophomore Maddie Dachowski responded for the Explorers to tie the game up. Delaware doubled up and took a 3-1 lead, sophomore Brittany Stevens brought one back for La Salle, then Delaware pushed the lead back to a two-goal margin. The Explorers ended the half with a commanding finish, scoring three straight goals until the Blue Hens nabbed one back in the dying seconds. The teams went to the locker room tied at five. The first 20 minutes of the second half was a back-and-forth affair. Stevens found the back of the net to put La Salle ahead, Delaware responded, sophomore Bridget Ruskey tallied, and then Bedard made it 7-7. After that goal with 9:54 left, the Blue Hens found a patch of form that put the match to bed. Bedard (twice more) and fellow junior Christine Long scored to extend the lead to 10-7. Dachowski would give La Salle hope with a goal inside four minutes to play that cut the lead to two, but Delaware evaded onrushing Explorers in a game of keep-away to seal it. A final Blue Hens score with a tick left reaffirmed that La Salle would fall to 1-2. INSIDE THE NUMBERS Dachowski paced the Explorers in points with three goals and an assist. Stevens and Ruskey were the other two Explorers with multi-goal games. Spreading the wealth: seven of La Salle's eight goals were assisted, but not one Explorer had more than a single assist. Disruptive forces: sophomore Emily Johnston led the team in caused turnovers with three, adding two draw controls to her line. She also was second in ground balls with three and added an assist offensively. Ruskey had the most draw controls with three, while adding two caused turnovers. Senior Isabel Caddick had two caused turnovers and two draw controls. In the loss, Molly Loughlin saw the full 60 minutes. She saved eight on 19 shots for a save percentage of 42.1%. UP NEXT La Salle travel to Emmitsburg, Maryland for the first time in program history to visit Mount St. Mary's on Friday. The Explorers, who have only played The Mount once, won at home in 2013. They'll look to even their season record at 2-2 with first draw at 7 p.m.
