(Titan Field) DETROIT (3/16/2019) -- Senior attacker Lexie Kinmond tallied a season-high nine points, moving into second place in career points, and the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team downed Kent State, 16-12, on a chilly afternoon from Titan Field. It was the second home victory of the season for the Titans. Seven Titans overall found the back of the net in the contest, led by Kinmond's five goals. The senior attacker from Peterborough, Ont. added four assists and went past former Titan standout Anna Eidem in career points as she finished the game with 235, one better than Eidem's 234. She is second all-time and 37 points behind the career mark of 272 held by former Titan Emily Boissonneault. Junior Kaitlyn Wandelt tallied three goals and two assists for the Titans, while sophomore attacker Kamryn Corraro had two goals and two assists for a career-high four points. Seniors Emma Leszczak and Morgan Girardi also each added two goals for Detroit Mercy, which opened a 10-4 lead at halftime over the Golden Flashes. Sophomore attacker Kristina Ellis and freshman attacker Julianne Snyder also scored goals -- with Snyder's goal her first collegiate marker for the Titans. Senior goalkeeper Allison McDonough had another strong game in net, turning away nine shots on goal and collecting eight ground balls for the second consecutive game. The Titan defense had 15 caused turnovers in the game and was 23-for-24 on clears, while also holding the shot advantage in the game, 36-25. The defense forced 27 KSU turnovers. It was a back-and-forth game early as Detroit Mercy held a 3-2 lead after Kinmond's second goal of the game at the 20-minute mark. After a KSU goal, Kinmond completed her hat trick and Ellis took a pass from Kinmond and scored as Detroit Mercy went ahead 5-3. After another Golden Flashes' goal, the Titans scored the final five goals of the first half from four different goal scorers. Girardi scored twice during the stretch and Corraro, Kinmond and Leszczak all each found the back of the net as Detroit Mercy led 10-4 at the halftime break. Kent State scored three of the first four goals in the second half, but Detroit Mercy responded with the next four, with Wandelt having a hand in three of those goals. Wandelt took a quick feed from freshman midfielder Taryn McManus and scored at the 22:50 mark and just seconds later Leszczak scored her second of the game from Wandelt. Kinmond then assised on two-straight goals in an 11-second span as Wandelt and Corraro both scored off her passes and Detroit Mercy took a 15-7 advantage with 21:31 remaining. Neither team scored for the next 10 minutes of the contest. There was several stoppages in the second half with the referees issuing yellow cards often during the second half, eight of 10 that were handed out in the game overall. Kent State was able to trim the Titan lead to 15-10, but Snyder scored her first collegiate goal with 4:10 left as Detroit Mercy had a six-goal lead late. Wandelt led Detroit Mercy in draw controls on the day, tallying seven, while Kinmond and freshman Elise Harder each added two DC. McDonough had eight ground balls, while Taryn McManus, Kinmond and Wandelt all each added three GB. Freshman attacker Allie Falk also had two ground balls and Corraro added two GB. Ten different Titans had caused turnovers, led by Wandelt's three. Corraro, McDonough and senior defender Ali Magyaros all each posted two caused turnovers. Detroit Mercy and Kent State both finished with 27 ground balls in the contest. The Titans had a 21-10 shots advantage in the first half, while both teams had 15 shots in the second half of Saturday's game. Kent State had a slight edge in draw controls, 16-14, while the foul count was also almost dead even (26-25 Kent State). She also leads the team with 30 ground balls after her 16 in the past two games. • Leszczak was one shy of her career-high with three points; She had four points in a game during her sophomore season. • It was the first meeting between Kent State and the Titans with the Golden Flashes in their first official season of women's lacrosse. • Detroit Mercy improved to 2-1 at home this season (and 1-1 from Titan Field), with its only loss being an 9-8 overtime setback earlier this week.
