The Basics Final Score: Detroit Mercy 14, Furman 12 Records: Detroit Mercy 6-7 (2-1 SoCon), Furman 6-7 (1-1 SoCon) Location: Detroit, Mich. (Titan Field) DETROIT (4/12/2019) -- Sophomore attacker Kamryn Corraro scored a career-high five goals and junior midfielder Kaitlyn Wandelt added five points as the University of Detroit Mercy women's lacrosse team handed preseason favorite Furman their first Southern Conference loss of the season in a 14-12 victory on Friday from Titan Field. Detroit Mercy never trailed in the contest as both the Titan defense and offense were clicking in the game as the Titans improved to 2-1 in Southern Conference play. The Titans can clinch a postseason birth with a victory Sunday over Wofford. It was the second-straight win over Furman after Detroit Mercy defeated the Paladins on the road last season. Corraro scored on all five of her shots to lead Detroit Mercy in scoring. Wandelt added five points, scoring a hat trick with three goals and adding two assists. Senior attacker Lexie Kinmond had one goal and three assists, while senior midfielder Morgan Girardi posted two goals and one assist for the Titans. Seven players scored in the game overall for Detroit Mercy. Detroit Mercy was strong all game long on defense as well, allowing just five goals in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Allison McDonough made nine saves to go along with three ground balls. Freshman midfielder Taryn McManus had team-highs with five ground balls and three caused turnovers, adding one goal and one assist on the offensive end, including the game's first goal. Senior defender Ali Magyaros recorded a career-high three ground balls. The Titans opened the scoring with McManus' fifth goal of the season, taking a pass from Wandelt and finding the back of the net as Detroit Mercy led 1-0. Defense dominated the game early with each team trading goals, but Detroit Mercy would break a 2-2 tie with three-straight goals as Corraro on a free-position shot, Wandelt and Girardi all scored to put the Titans ahead 5-2 at the 8:04 mark of the first half. Corraro scored again with 4:03 left before the halftime break and Girardi scored in the final minute of the first half as Detroit Mercy held a 7-5 halftime lead. Freshman Elise Harder opened the second half with her lone goal of the contest and Detroit Mercy used a 4-1 run to open the second half, as after a Furman goal, Wandelt scored off an assist from sophomore Kristina Ellis and then Corraro scored on back-to-back goals off assists from Kinmond. Detroit Mercy held an 11-6 lead with 17:33 left. The Paladins, who were picked as the favorites in the SoCon preseason poll, came back with a 3-1 run to pull within three, 12-9, with 7:12 remaining. But Detroit Mercy was undeterred, scoring two goals in the next 90 seconds with Wandelt scored her 34th goal of the season off a free-position opportunity before Corraro scored her fifth goal of the game with 5:43 left. Furman would score the final three goals of the game, but Detroit Mercy secured a key draw control in the final minute of the game with Ellis winning the draw. Detroit Mercy would wind down the clock and Furman was unable to get any more looks on net in the last minute as the Titans secured the victory on a windy, but warm day from Titan Field. Detroit Mercy was strong on draw controls with three players recording five draw controls each -- Harder, Ellis and Wandelt. The stat sheet was fairly even between the two squads with the shots 33-30 in Furman's favor and Detroit Mercy holding a shot on goal edge, 22-21. The Titans held an advantage in draw controls, however, out-drawing Furman 18-10 and 11-4 in the second half. Furman had 12 caused turnovers, while Detroit Mercy had eight in the contest.
