The Drexel women's lacrosse team came up short in its season opener on Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field, falling to Johns Hopkins, 17-9. The Dragons allowed the game's first three goals and could not climb back closer than two the rest of the way. Colleen Grady and Courtney Dietzel each scored a pair of goals in the loss, with Grady adding an assist. Karson Harris had a goal and a helper along with three draw controls. Sigourney Heerink, who entered in the second half, came up with six saves in goal while allowing five of the Blue Jays' 17 scores. Caroline Cummings, Cassidy Delaney, Claire Jarema and Marah Hayes also scored for Drexel, with Jarema winning three draws and Cummings two. Lucy Schneidereith forced three Hopkins turnovers and Jamie Schneidereith caused two more, as did Arden Edgerton. After Hopkins got off to its quick start, scoring three times in the first 5:18 of the game, the Dragons and Blue Jays traded goals for most of the rest of the first half. It was 7-5 Johns Hopkins with 6:50 remaining before halftime, but the Blue Jays were able to string together a pair of scores late in the half to take a 9-5 lead into the break. Courtney Dietzel responded with the first goal of the second half, pulling Drexel back within three. Hopkins wasted little time responding, again scoring three quick goals, this time in the span of 1:08. The duo of Harris and Grady got two of the goals back to make it 12-8 with still 22:37 to go and Dietzel netted another after a Johns Hopkins goal to make it 13-9 with 10:42 remaining, but that would be as close as the Dragons could get. The Blue Jays scored the game's final four goals to ice the game away and get Drexel's season underway with a defeat. The Dragons will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 16, when the Dragons visit Iona at 1 p.m.
