PHILADELPHIA – Fans of the Drexel women's lacrosse team may have gotten a glimpse of what to expect from the Dragons under first year head coach Jill Batcheller on Saturday afternoon, as the Dragons seized control late in the first half and put together their best offensive performance in nearly seven years to defeat Rutgers at Vidas Field, 18-12. The Dragons got five goals apiece from Colleen Grady and Lucy Schneidereith as they earned the program's first ever win over a Big Ten team and its first win against Rutgers since 1993. The Dragons' 18 goals marked the most the team has scored since an 18-8 victory over Longwood on March 14, 2012. In addition to Grady and Schneidereith, Cassidy Delaney put together her first hat trick of the year with three goals along with an assist. Grady led the team with eight total points, adding three assists. Both the five goals and the eight points are career highs for the sophomore. Schneidereith's five-goal game gives her 10 on the year, tops on the team, and 12 total points that are second only to Grady's 16. Karson Harris added two goals and an assist in the victory on Saturday, her first multi-goal effort of the season. Courtney Dietzel had a goal – which would ultimately prove to be the game winner – and an assist, while Maggie Stetson and Caroline Cummings added goals and Hayleigh Simpson notched her first collegiate point with an assist. It was not just an offensive outburst for Drexel, which shut down the Scarlet Knights in large part after the five-minute mark of the first half. Zoe Bennett posted a new career high with 15 saves in the victory. She helped limit Taralyn Naslonski, whose 28 points coming into the game were fourth in the nation, to three goals on 11 shots. Harris added six draw controls to help Drexel maintain control of the game after grabbing the lead, with Dietzel and Cummings winning three draws each and Simpson adding two. Dietzel, Arden Edgerton and Lindsay Shettle each picked up a pair of ground balls while Dietzel, Delaney, Grace Osterdale, Katie Pappas and Jamie Schneidereith each caused a Rutgers turnover. The Dragons closed the first half on a 5-0 run to take control. Grady and Lucy Schneidereith each scored a pair of goals in the run, which was capped when Delaney scored at the buzzer on a free position attempt that was triggered with one second on the clock. The Dragons won the last four draw controls of the half to help fuel their run, and outdrew the Scarlet Knights 10-7 in the first half. Zoe Bennett had nine of her 15 saves before halftime, while the goaltending duo of Kameron Halsall and Devon Kearns managed just one save on 11 Drexel shots on goal in the opening 30 minutes. Rutgers, which had led 7-5 before the Dragons' first-half run, came out firing in the second half. The Scarlet Knights scored three of the first four goals of the half to make it an 11-10 Dragons lead, but just 17 seconds after Samantha Budd pulled Rutgers back within a goal, Delaney re-established the two-goal lead with her second of the afternoon. That opened a four-goal Dragons run, which included tallies by Dietzel and Harris as well as Delaney's third, giving Drexel a 15-10 lead with 19:01 to play. Rutgers would score the next two, though, making it 15-12 with 16:49 still to play. After the frenetic start to the second half, which saw a total of 10 goals in just over 13 minutes, the game began to settle down. Rutgers had opportunities, but were stymied by Bennett in goal and held off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. A pair of Lucy Schneidereith goals followed at the 14:01 and 12:49 marks, but neither team would score again until Lucy found Grady in close in the closing seconds of play. Now back at .500 for the season and with their first home victory in the books, the Dragons will get back on the road for three of their next four. They won't have far to go for their next game, however, as they head across University City to take on Penn on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. They will then return home to square off with Villanova next Saturday at 1 p.m. before back-to-back road games at Manhattan and UMBC over the next week.
