PHILADELPHIA - It was a slow start for the 8th-ranked University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon, as the Quakers fell behind 4-0, their largest deficit of the season. Luckily for Penn, the Red and Blue settled down and got separation late, outlasting Drexel 12-10 to improve to 5-0 (1-0 Ivy) on the year. PENN NEWS AND NOTES *The Quakers are now 5-0 for the second-straight year and seventh time in program history. *Penn dominated draw controls, with 17 to Drexel's seven. Chelsea Kibler led the way with six, followed by five from Abby Bosco and four from Erin Barry. Kibler has collected six draw controls in one game three times this year. *The Quakers boasted seven different goal scorers for the fifth time in as many games this season, led by a hat trick from junior midfielder Erin Barry. Barry was a perfect 3-for-3 on shot attempts, including two on free position opportunities. *Laura Crawford, Zoe Belodeau and Gabby Rosenzweig each had two goals for the Quakers. Rosenzweig and Belodeau led the way with three assists each. *Freshman Krissy Kowalski earned her first victory in goal, playing over 45 minutes and collecting three saves. *Penn improves to 14-2 all-time against the Dragons and has won two in a row against its neighborhood foe. HOW IT HAPPENED The Quakers were slow out of the gate on a chilly day inside Franklin Field, conceding four-straight goals to the Dragons in the first seven minutes of action, their largest deficit of the season. Penn got each of the first two draws but couldn't finish on its shot attempts, while the Dragons were efficient and effective in their scoring early. Penn first got going on defense, collecting three turnovers in a row and forcing a shot clock violation, before firing up the scoring. Penn's first goal came from Belodeau on an acrobatic finish from Bosco, and following a draw control from Barry, it was the Quakers again just 26 seconds later, as Rosenzweig fed Barry wide open in front of the goal to cut the deficit in half. Another draw control led straight to another Penn goal, as Rosenzweig set up shot behind the goal and this time fed Crawford, making it 4-3. Penn would tie things up at the 12-minute mark following a goal from Taylyn Stadler, fed by Belodeau, erasing the four-goal deficit. The Quakers made it a 5-0 run and got their first lead of the day on a score from Belodeau 18 seconds later. With all the momentum shifted Penn's way, the Dragons buckled down, tying the game twice more before the end of the half at 5-5 and 6-6. The final goal of the period would come from Penn however, as Rosenzweig took it herself to make it a 7-6 advantage into the break. It wasn't until the 20:27 mark of the second half that Penn was able to find more than a one-goal cushion against the Dragons, as Penn jumped ahead once more in the first 10 minutes of the period, only to be tied up again. Up 9-8 following a goal from Crawford, the Quakers capitalized on a man-up opportunity with a free position score rocketed in from Barry. Two more goals from Penn, this time from McMahon and Barry again, would extend the lead to 12-10 before a late push from the Dragons to make the final score 12-10 in favor of the Quakers. WHAT'S NEXT? The Quakers will round out their three-game homestand with a matchup against 21st-ranked Georgetown, Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m.
