No. 24 Rutgers women's lacrosse (2-1) collected another statement victory as it defeated No. 19 Ohio State (1-2), 12-9, on Friday afternoon at SHI Stadium. Down 7-6 at halftime, the Scarlet Knights used a 6-2 scoring run in the second half to secure their second consecutive come-from-behind win this season after they also earned a comeback victory at Johns Hopkins on Sunday. It marks the first win over a ranked opponent for RU since 2017, when it defeated then-No. 18 James Madison by the same 12-9 margin in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The win over OSU also earned the program its first two-game winning streak in Big Ten Conference play since it rattled off three straight league wins in 2016. Senior captain Taralyn Naslonski produced a game-high six points on five goals and an assist, while sophomore Cassidy Spilis added four goals against the Buckeyes. Rutgers outshot Ohio State, 32-22, held a 17-6 advantage on the draw thanks to sophomore defender Meghan Ball's game-high seven, and forced 14 turnovers, as sophomore goalkeeper Alonna Gliksman earned her second win in cage with seven stops. "This team just keeps believing," said head coach Melissa Lehman. "They do not waiver and know that if they stay the course and have each other's back, they can stay in any game. We came out in the first half and did a great job on the draw control and we just felt we needed to continue success there. Winning the draw helped us last week and allowed us to come out after halftime and play strong." First Half Rutgers started strong with a 4-1 scoring run in the first 10 minutes of the game. Spilis knocked in back-to-back goals, senior captain Hannah Hollingsworth found a cutting Naslonski for a third while a free-position strike from senior captain Julia Lytle gave RU a 4-1 advantage at the 19:20 mark in the half. Ohio State would claw itself back into the game and led by as much as two before sophomore Jenna Byrne found classmate Ashley Campo with 1:39 left before the break to make it just a 7-6 game in favor of the Buckeyes. Second Half The Scarlet Knights used a 5-2 advantage on the restart out of the locker room to erase Ohio State's small lead and put the game out of reach. Naslonski drilled a free position attempt to tie the game one minute into the second half, while Spilis netted her fourth of the afternoon to regain the lead for Rutgers. A 4-2 scoring run in the final 20 minutes, which included Naslonski's final three goals of the day, secured the win over the Buckeyes, who entered Friday after an impressive 15-12 win over then-No. 9 Michigan on Sunday in Columbus. RU held the visitor to just two goals in the second half and to no scores in the final 11 minutes of play. Notes Earned its first win over a ranked opponent since March 11, 2017 – a 12-9 win over No. 18 James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. Collected it second consecutive conference win – a first since RU earned three consecutive over Ohio State, Michigan and then the Buckeyes in the 2016 Big Ten Tournament. Earned its second consecutive come-from-behind victory. RU trailed Johns Hopkins, 8-5, before it left Baltimore with a 13-10 win on Sunday. With her seven stops, Gliksman now is over 100 stops for her career. Naslonski needs just seven goals to possess 100 for her career. Her 126 career points moved her past standout Kristina Dunphey for 18th place in program history. Spilis recorded her third consecutive game with four or more goals. Up Next Rutgers closes out its two-game weekend series with the Buckeyes on Sunday at noon. The game will stream via BTNPlus.
