The Basics • Score: Johns Hopkins-12, #24 Ohio State-11 • Records: JHU (1-3, 1-3 B1G) • OSU (1-4, 1-4 B1G) • Location: Columbus, OH • Ohio Stadium • The Short Story: Mackenzie Heldberg and Maggie Schneidereith combined for seven goals to lead the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to a 12-11 win over host and 24th-ranked Ohio State Friday afternoon in Big Ten action. How it Happened • Ohio State took the early lead off a Kelsey Reed goal just 67 seconds in. But Hopkins answered with a free position goal by senior Shelby Harrison and a Heldberg goal from the right alley to put the Blue Jays up at the 21:08-mark. • The Buckeyes responded with two of their own to go back in front, 3-2, with 18:07 on the clock. Sophomore Maeve Barker found Schneidereith open on the doorstep for the quick-stick and the teams were knotted at three. Reed answered with a strike from eight yards out and once again Ohio State had the lead. • Trailing by one with 10 minutes to go in the half, the Blue Jays scored three straight in a span of just 99 seconds to push out to a 6-4 lead. Heldberg took a pass from Schneidereith, turned and fired to tie the game. Schneidereith then forced a turnover at midfield and senior Aurora Cordingley took it all the way for the score. Freshman Eliza Bowman capped the spurt with her first career goal, scoring from the middle of fan off a Bailey Cheetham pass. • Ohio State pulled back within one when Lindsay Epstein converted a free position shot at 6:22. Schneidereith answered with a free position goal of her own to send Hopkins into the half with a 7-5 lead. • Coming out of the break, freshman Abbey Hurlbrink and Bowman scored two quick goals to push the Blue Jays' lead to four. The Buckeyes came roaring back with three unanswered goals to trim to the deficit to one with 22:27 still to play. • Heldberg sandwiched a pair of goals around an Epstein strike and Hopkins led 11-9 at 18:49. Jamie Level scored off the dodge and Reed followed with goal from the right alley in transition to tie the game just four minutes later. Schneidereith put Hopkins back on top with a free position goal at 13:18 in what turned out to be the final goal of the game. • After trading empty possessions over the ensuing 12 and a half minutes, the Buckeyes took over in their own end with 35 seconds to play. Following a timeout, Ohio State cleared, but Hurlbrink checked the ball out of Caly O'Brien's stick and Harrison pounced on the ground ball. She then sent a long clearing pass to Schneidereith and the clock expired. What it Means • Hopkins picked up its first win of the season and earned its fourth straight win over Ohio State. The Blue Jays are now 13-6 all-time against Ohio State. • Schneidereith moved into seventh place in school Division I history with 132 career goals.
