NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Through the falling snowflakes at Reese Stadium Wednesday night, Yale women's lacrosse fans got a glimpse of the team's bright future in the home opener. The team's 18-7 win vs. local rival Quinnipiac was powered largely by first-years and sophomores, as those two classes accounted for 17 of the team's 18 goals. First-year midfielder Jill Gollob led the way with five goals. Yale (1-1, 0-0 Ivy League) scored early and often in the first half, as Gollob got the Bulldogs on the board off an assist by sophomore midfielder Sam Higgins just 31 seconds in. Quinnipiac (1-2, 0-0 MAAC) scored the game's next two goals, but would not score again for nearly 18 minutes. By then Yale had reeled off eight straight goals. The Bulldogs took a commanding 12-3 lead into halftime. The second half saw the debut of first-year goalkeeper Clare Boone, who came on in relief of sophomore Amelia Drake. The Bulldogs, playing many substitutes on the cold and snowy night, outscored the Bobcats 6-4 in the second to make the final 18-7. First year attacker Olivia Penoyer (4-2-6), led the team in points, followed by Gollob (5-0-5). Higgins added four (2-3-4). Sophomore midfielder Olivia Markert had three (2-1-3), as did junior midfielder Vanessa Yu (1-2-3) -- the lone non-first-year/sophomore to score a goal. First-year midfielder Payton Vaughn also had a multiple-point night (2-0-2). Junior attacker Devon Doheny had an assist, and first-year attacker Anna Bowers scored a goal. For Bowers and Vaughn, those were their first career goals. Drake made one save and Boone made three as Yale outshot Quinnipiac 28-18. Senior attacker Izzy Nixon had eight draw controls, while Gollob added four and Vaughn had three. First-year midfielder Emily Clorite had three caused turnovers. Yale hosts Hartford next Wednesday.
