TOWSON, Md. – A Towson team that has faced seven teams ranked in the top 22 got a scare from the Yale women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium, as the Bulldogs put up 13 goals on the Tigers -- as many as or more than five of those ranked teams did. But in the end Towson had just enough offensive firepower to hang on for a 15-13 win.
Seven different players scored for Yale, led by hat tricks from first-year midfielder Jill Gollob and sophomore midfielder Olivia Markert. Senior attacker Izzy Nixon had 12 draw controls, helping Yale to a 21-9 advantage in that category.
Yale (4-5, 0-3 Ivy League) took an early 2-1 lead on goals by Nixon and first-year attacker Olivia Penoyer. Towson (2-7, 0-0 CAA) reeled off three straight goals after that, but the Bulldogs answered with a three-goal run of their own to take a 5-4 lead. Towson then scored four of the next five goals of the game to go up 8-6 with 25:56 left.
The Bulldogs kept chasing the lead for the rest of the game, never letting Towson get more than three goals ahead -- but also never getting closer than within one goal. After senior attacker Addie Zinsner's goal made the score 11-10 Towson with 13:22 to play, Towson got the draw control and scored on a free position to keep the Bulldogs at bay. Penoyer, Gollob and Markert all scored in the final 3:39 but it was not enough for a comeback.
Markert (3-1-4) and sophomore midfielder Sam Higgins (2-2-4) led Yale in scoring, followed by Gollob (3-0-3), Pennoyer (2-1-3), junior midfielder Vanessa Yu (1-1-2), Zinsner (1-1-2), Nixon (1-0-1) and first-year midfielder Payton Vaughn (0-1-1).
In addition to Nixon's 12 draws, Markert and Vaughn had four each. Sophomore Amelia Drake and first year Clare Boone both saw time in goal, totaling seven saves.
The game was a homecoming of sorts for Yale's four players from Maryland: first-year attacker Rachel Anderson, first-year midfielder Kenya Boston, first-year attacker Anna Bowers and sophomore attacker Isabelle Webster.
Yale returns to Ivy League play next, hosting Cornell on Saturday Apr. 6.
