Hempstead, NY - Junior Alyssa Parrella continued her dominant season with five goals and one assist and junior Alexa Mattera added four goals and one assist to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a 14-11 victory over William & Mary on Friday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium. The win came in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both squads. The five goals gave Parrella 57 for the season, tying the program's single season record still with five regular season games on the schedule. She tied the mark set by Kathleen Mikowski in 2003 and tied by Parrella last year. Parrella's 69 points this season moved her into ninth place on the single season points chart. She is tied with Brittain Altomare, who posted her 69 points during the 2013 campaign. The single season record of 81 was set by Altomare in 2015. Hofstra upped its record to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win, while William & Mary falls to 5-5 and 0-1 in the league. With its eighth win, Hofstra has now won at least eight games in six of the last seven seasons. After William & Mary opened the scoring at the 28:45 mark on a free-position goal from Lauren Russell, Hofstra would take an early 3-1 lead as sophomore Katie Whelan got the Pride on the board and Parrella added two more tallies to make it 3-1 with 25:56 left in the first half. The teams would battle throughout the opening stanza with Hofstra looking to create some breathing room as sophomore Arianna Esposito scored twice and Parrella added another to make it 8-5 with 5:26 left before intermission. The Tribe would end the half with three straight goals, though, to knot the score at eight heading into the break. The momentum swing for the Tribe continued into the second half as William & Mary scored twice in the first five minutes to take a two-goal advantage at 10-8 after a free-position goal from Belle Martire. The Pride quickly answered and goals from Mattera and junior Mary Kate Gerety tied it at 10 before William & Mary took its last lead of the game with just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Trailing 11-10, Parrella kick-started a game-closing 4-0 scoring run that pushed the Pride to the victory. After she evened the score at 11, freshman Amanda Guerra scored the eventual game-winner with 11:05 to play. Mattera and Parrella would each score in the final six minutes of the game to ice the contest. Whelan finished with a goal and two assists for the Pride, while freshman Jess Smith had 12 saves with eight coming in the second half. Junior Darcie Smith posted game-highs of eight draw controls and three ground balls for the Pride. Russell and Martire each had four goals for the Tribe, which also got three goals from Grace Ahonen. Starr Howard led William & Mary with five draw controls, while Holly Hager posted three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Hofstra returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Elon for a 1 p.m. contest. NOTES - Hofstra improved to 13-6 all-time against William & Mary. The Pride has won six straight over the Tribe. - Hofstra has now won 34 of its last 47 home games against CAA foes. - With her assist in the game, Parrella now has 64 in her career to tie Kristin Marshall (1999-2002) for fourth all-time in program history.
