TOWSON, Md. – Sunday afternoon the Towson University women's lacrosse team capped a two-win weekend with a 22-12 victory over William & Mary at home. The Tigers improve to 4-9 on the year with a 2-1 mark in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Towson was led by sophomore Kaitlin Thornton with five goals while Natalie Sulmonte tallied four with an assist. How it Happened Kaitlin Thornton wasted no time, scoring the first Tiger goal at the 27:54 mark, opening a 3-0 run from the home team to start the game. Natalie Sulmonte and Kerri Liucci both scored in the next three minutes before William & Mary found the back of the net. With 22:26 left in the first half, Kerri Thornton scored her first of the day, followed by Shelby Stack and Rayna Deltuva, taking a 6-1 lead with 21:17 to go. The Tribe's Belle Martire cut the lead to four, with a free position goal at the 19:23 mark. Deltuva recorded her second goal with 15:53 left in the half, her goal would be the only one for the next nine minutes. Two more goals from each team, including Nicole Liucci's first of the day, put the Tigers at a 9-4 advantage entering the locker room. In the second half there were 21 total goals scored, a back-and-forth 30 minutes of action. Opening the second half was Kaitlin Thornton once again, assisted by Sulmonte to put Towson up 10-4. William & Mary responded at the 27:42 mark and would not go away quietly. A pair of goals, on from Deltuva and another from Coeli Love, extended the Tigers lead by seven with 22 minutes to go. The Tribe scored two back-to-back, cutting the lead to five with plenty of time to tie the game. Sulmonte struck next, her third of the day, and 16 seconds later Annie Sachs tallied another one for the home team. Towson led 14-7 with 17:31 left before William & Mary scored three unanswered. With 12:40 left on the clock, it was a four-goal game with the Tigers ahead. Kaitlin Thornton and Hannah Hobbes put Towson's lead to six on two free position goals two minutes apart. Martire for the Tribe scored next on a free position shot, cutting the lead to five with 9:15 to go. Kiley Keating finished with six saves on the day, two on free position attempts that would have put the road team in a better position to tie the game. In the remaining 8:49, Towson scored six goals, four unanswered, to close out the game after William & Mary struck once more with 7:29 on the clock. Beyond the Box The 22 goals scored today are a season-high for Towson, previously the season best was 17 against Saint Joseph's in March. Kaitlin Thornton's five goals is a career-best. Previously Thornton scored four against Florida in 2018, she has set a career-high with one more against William & Mary. This is the first time since the March 13 game against Saint Joseph's that Towson had eight or more players score, against the Tribe 10 players scored at least once. Rayna Deltuva led the team in caused turnovers with three, matching her career-high previously recorded at Georgetown earlier this season. This is the third consecutive game that both Kaitlin and Kerri Thornton have scored in. This is also the first game of the year that both Kerri and Nicole Liucci have scored in the same game as Nicole recorded her first collegiate goal today. With the win today, Towson has now defeated William & Mary in the last 10 meetings.
