The defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champion Wagner women's lacrosse team trailed by just a 3-2 count midway through the first half before Vanderbilt put together a 7-0 run in building a 10-2 lead at the break en route to a 16-7 win this afternoon in the season opener for both teams. The Seahawks will now focus their energies on Wednesday's home opener when the Green & White host Iona in the inaugural game at Hameline Field under first-year head coach Michelle Tumolo. Opening draw between the Seahawks and the Gaels on Wednesday is set for 3:00 p.m. In this afternoon's game played at the soggy Vanderbilt Athletics Complex, the Commodores opened with three straight goals in the first 9:09 in taking a 3-0 lead. Wagner settled down and executed its offense well on two occasions, resulting in unassisted goals from speedy sophomore midfielder Erin Kerstetter at the 20:31 mark, followed by a score out of the stick of senior attacker and 2018 First-Team All-NEC selection Anna Belle Reilly with 16:13 left in the opening half. Vandy then opened the second half on a 4-0 run, to make it 11 straight goals, giving the Commodores a commanding 14-2 lead before Kerstetter was able to stop the bleeding with an unassisted score at the 20:04 mark that made it 14-3. Following a Vanderbilt score, Wagner played some of its best lacrosse of the afternoon, embarking on a 3-0 run. Sophomore attacker Stephanie Peluso got the run started at the 11:55 mark off a feed from Kerstetter, that made it a 15-4 game. 33230 First-Year Head Coach Michelle Tumolo That's the way the score remained until sophomore midfielder Madeline Seims found the back of the net with an unassisted tally that made it 15-5. Reilly then ended the surge with her second score of the game, this one coming on another Kerstetter assist, with 3:16 left that made it 15-6. After Vanderbilt got one back from Griffin Gearhardt, Reilly found the net for the hat trick, narrowly beating the game's final horn off, off an assist from junior attack Sephanie Falcone, This score marked the 13th time in the Arizona native's career that she has scored three or more goals in a game, capping a game-closing 5-2 surge, that fashioned the final score at 16-7. Reilly was Wagner's leading goal-scorer on the day with three scores while Kerstetter was the team-leader in points (2g, 2a). Peluso and Seims finished with one goal apiece while Falcone added an assist. In addition to her four-point outing, Kerstetter paced the Seahawks with five draw controls, while adding three ground balls and two caused turnovers. In goal, redshirt senior Kelsey Fee matched her career high 14 saves while playing the entire 60 minutes between the pipes. Defensively, in front of Fee, senior Maggie Jent recorded a career-high five caused turnovers, to go with two groundballs. Senior defender and 2018 NEC All-NEC choice Maddie Courtney was active as well, leading the team with four ground balls while being credited with one caused turnover. Vanderbilt was led by Sophie Furlong's five goals, while Julie Blaze and Maddie Souza added two goals apiece for the Commodores.
