Junior attack Stephanie Falcone poured in a career-high five goals and the Wagner women's lacrosse rode a 42-13 shooting advantage to a 14-4 victory over Iona on Wednesday, marking the first win in the Michelle Tumolo era. In bouncing back from their 16-7 season-opening loss at Vanderbilt on Sunday, the Seahawks move to 1-1 on the season while the Gaels fall to 0-2. Iona, which competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), had won the last six meetings between the schools in building a 6-1 lead in the all-time series. Prior to today, Wagner's lone victory over the Gaels had come in the teams' initial meeting back on April 20, 2015 when the Seahawks earned a 16-13 win in New Rochelle, NY. Senior attack Anna Belle Reilly, a 2018 First-Team All-Northeast Conference (NEC) selection, picked up where she left off a season ago in recording four points on two goals and two assists. Also recording a pair of goals for the Seahawks this afternoon were sophomore midfielders Erin Kerstetter and Madeline Seims. Sophomore midfielder Victoria Tucci finished with three points on one goal and a team-high two assists with sophomore attack Stefani Peluso added two points with one goal and one assist. In goal, senior Kelsey Fee turned away seven shots. Wagner raced out to a 4-1 lead midway through the first half before Iona's Leah Marshall scored to make it a 4-2 game with 13:41 remaining before intermission. After the teams traded goals over the final 9:09 of the half, they entered their respective locker rooms at halftime with the Seahawks on top by a 5-3 count. The Green & White opened with a 3-0 run in the first eight minutes of the second half on goals by Peluso, Seims, and Kerstetter, in stretching their lead to 8-3. Iona got one back on a free position shot by Emma Rippon with 20:01 left to play to make it 8-4, before Wagner answered by reeling off six unanswered goals as the Seahawks won going away. Iona's four goals came on individual scores from different players as Marshall, Rippon, Danielle Keenan, and Mariah Metcalf each found the net for the Gaels who received a 12-save effort from goalie Shannonn McCaffrey. Six of Wagner's goals came on free-position shots as the Gaels were whistled for 49 fouls on the afternoon. In addition to holding that decided 41-13 edge in shots, Wagner held the upper hand in ground balls (22-15) and draw controls (11-8). The Seahawks are next in action on Tuesday, February 19 when the Green & White make the roughly one-hour (35-mile) drive east to the Hofstra University campus located in Long Island's Hempstead, NY. Opening draw between the Seahawks and the Pride is set for 3:00 p.m. Wagner-Iona All-Time Series February 13, 2018: Wagner 14, Iona 4 (Staten Island, NY) Feb. 14, 2018: Iona 11, Wagner 10 (New Rochelle, NY) Feb. 15, 2017: Iona 12, Wagner 10 (Staten Island, NY) Feb. 17, 2016: Iona 17, Wagner 12 (New Rochelle, NY) March 18, 2015: Iona 11, Wagner 10 (Staten Island, NY) March 27, 2007: Iona 10, Wagner 8 (New Rochelle, NY) March 23, 2006: Iona 19, Wagner 8 (Staten Island, NY) April 20, 2005: Wagner 16, Iona 13 (New Rochelle, NY)
