Hempstead, NY - Junior Alexa Mattera posted five goals, six draw controls, five ground balls and three caused turnovers and junior Alyssa Parrella had seven goals and two assists to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a dominating 17-4 win over Wagner on Tuesday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium. The goals and points total for Parrella both tied career-highs, while Mattera established a new career-high in ground balls and tied her career-high in goals and caused turnovers. The win was the Pride's second in a row and improves Hofstra's record to 2-1 this year. Wagner falls to 1-2 with the loss. Hofstra left no doubt from the start as the Pride scored the first six goals of the game, including three from Parrella, to lead 6-0 with 14 minutes left in the opening stanza. The Seahawks would score the next two goals of the contest to close the gap to four, but Hofstra exploded for six straight goals to end the half to take a commanding 12-2 lead into the break. Mattera keyed the run to end the half with three of the Pride goals. Parrella and Mattera opened the second half scoring as both found the back of the net in the first six minutes of the half to push the lead to 12 goals at 14-2. Madeline Seims would score for Wagner to end the 8-0 run spanning the halves, before Parrella scored twice and freshman Jackie Gatti scored her first of the game to push the advantage to 14 goals before Hofstra settled for the 17-4 victory. Sophomore Katie Whelan posted two assists for the Pride, while freshman Erin Demek added a goal and an assist. Freshman Jess Smith, who was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week earlier today, made seven saves for the Pride. Junior Darcie Smith added five ground balls and two draw controls. Seims and Victoria Tucci each had two goals for Wagner, which got five ground balls and three caused turnovers from Maddie Courtney. Hofstra is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Fairfield for a 1 p.m. contest. NOTES - Hofstra is now 3-0 all-time against Wagner. The Pride defeated the Seahawks, 15-10, in Staten Island last season. - Mattera's previous career-high in ground balls was four at Elon in 2017. She tied her career-high in goals set at Wagner last season and the three caused turnovers marked the third time she has done that in her career. - Parrella tied her career-high of seven goals, set at Fairfield in 2017 and also tied her career-high in points which she established against New Hampshire last season. - Parrella moved up in the top 10 all-time at Hofstra in draw controls. She now has 117 to move into ninth place all-time. She passed K'Leigh Vanaman, who had 115 from 2007-10.
